Just finished watching this, what are your opinions?
All i remember reading was "japan propaganda" but it wasn't retarded as i expected.

It isn't retarded, just plain boring.
Japan is gonna take over the world by anime girls and lolis.
Storyline aside, it was a fun watch.
Was an interesting twist on isekai I guess? The scenes where the Imperials get trashed in combat are the best.
I want to sex the brown elf.
As a non American who also watches their movies I am already immune against country wank. The thing is it was just done badly.
No real challenges or threats at all. At least the enemy could act smart and try to outplay them in guerilla warfire, try using the new tech, or magic in general. Secoundly it doesn't help when all the show is trying to do is falling back into harem tropes and characters being stuid for the sake of the "story".
It could have been great, but telling a good story never was the goal. It was just another setting only created to sell waifus to the fucks who ruin everything by their degenerate market demands.
Asteriks wars for the overlord crowd.
I do agree that the harem shit was pretty bad, but i disagree with the "No real challenges or threats at all", It was like they were trying to go for a cultural victory in Civ games, and i really liked that.
This, basically. Fans like to claim that you are a mad american if you don't like it, but it's just a wasted opportunity of a somewhat interesting premise.
I only watched this to see medieval people get raped by modern technology. I was not disappointed
the novels are fun to read because like a solid 25% of them are political maneuvering and military strategizing
i enjoy them in the same way i enjoyed watching clone wars
>it wasn't retarded as i expected
You really set your expectations low.
i like the s2 poster a lot
I would be okay with this
The most important thing is the man who didn't reject the loli, even was pleased.
I think the series had a lot of potential, but it was rushed to death and it had horrible pacing issues. When you have to use a split-screen to show what's going on, you might need to slow down.
The manga is much better in creating an atmosphere and showing what an odd and mysterious place the other side of the Gate is.
At the same time, the price for that is a much slower pace, downright glacial at times (Yao and the Minotaur). It still hasn't caught up with the anime and probably won't until later this year at the earliest.
Propaganda doesn't have to be retarded or dull.
The anime was great, I loved it but I take the notion that it is propaganda as a grain of salt. Puts stuff into perspective why things are as they are in that anime.
SEASON 2 FUCKING WHEN
manga titties are a plus
I want Rory to crush my balls.
>No real challenges or threats at all.
There were, trying to win against an enemy that isn't bound by morals and ethics while you are still trying to hold on your self-imposed rules is pretty challenging and that no matter the difference in the level of technology.
>At least the enemy could act smart and try to outplay them in guerilla warfire
Not enough time passed between the first japanese victories and the current state of the manga/anime for the empire to have developped guerilla warfare. The geography of the other world is mostly plains which is pretty bad for a guerilla warfare.
>try using the new tech
They can use them (the guns at least) but they can't reproduce them, they are so behind technologically that they don't understand the tech.
>magic in general.
Magic( in this work) is inefficient as fuck. Only mages can do it and they require a lot of time and ressources to train meanwhile it only require a few weeks/months to teach any schmuk how to use a gun and land vehicles. The only magic powerful enough to be a threat to the JISDF is the one wielded by semi-divine beings. That's not something the empire can get their hands on.
I watched it for the fantasy stomping. I was getting bored with the trope of science and tech being inferior to magic. I really didn't care about the propaganda
Manga is better, too bad it's so fucking behind on the anime
I guess the novels are better but I don't like reading weeb literature
same
>Came for modern weapons vs Renaissance larpers
>Stayed for the Japwank
I don't see any problem with this propaganda, the JSDF has never shed any blood, so describing them that way isn't a problem
I have MUCH more problems with shows like GI Joe, for example.
>what are your opinions?
I stay for the Manga since the art is nice and the story got over it's initial slump and is actually enjoyable now. But this story is lots of wasted potential and I've already seen it done better under the name "Stargate" so there is that.
>There were
You're arguing that they have to hold themselves back to win under their terms. But even in both the Anime and Manga/LN whenever they want to pull out a win they just do it because they have all the chips on their side of the table.
The problem is that Japan has such an overwhelming position that even with all the politics going on it's not like the empire can resist to any capacity. And a lot of the politics is just the JSDF gaining favor and everyone having to deal with Retarded Julius Caesar and his ineffectual policies.
>But even in both the Anime and Manga/LN whenever they want to pull out a win they just do it
And the empire still stands which means that, I agree that Japan can win if they want but they don't want just to win (otherwise the conflict would be over), they want to win in a specific way.
>The problem is that Japan has such an overwhelming position that even with all the politics going on it's not like the empire can resist to any capacity
And they don't do anything with it. they could have ended the conflict eons ago and yet here they are, opening an ambassy in the capital.
loli best girl
>And they don't do anything with it. they could have ended the conflict eons ago and yet here they are, opening an embassy in the capital.
They're portrayed as having spineless politicians fearful that this would devolve into their Afghanistan or Vietnam, so nothing is done.
But you are ignoring that even there political maneuvers are succeeding with few significant snags. The biggest hurdles and challenges aren't even related to the JSDF, it's just the empire infighting and Japan sitting in the background with the "I win" button. There is this illusion that they are struggling but the writING doesn't back it up on the slightest. You can't tell me you honestly think japan's political situation was in srious danger after we had that one arc where they outed a bunch of foreign nations spec ops, and later outed a corrupt Japanese politician revealing they had a handle on everything the whole time?
can't remember the name of it but there was a film made in the 70/80s with a similar concept where i think a large group of soldiers with tanks got transported to the sengoku era and despite the huge technology advantage they eventually got killed due to guerilla warfare/strategy/ would've been much better for gate to take a similar angle
She's up at the top with pic related.
Sengoku Jieitai, a.k.a. G.I. Samurai
>You can't tell me you honestly think japan's political situation was in srious danger
When did I even imply that? Or did you think that when I said "pretty challenging" I meant "dangerous"?
Whatever words you want they don't have any challenges user. Sitting back and waiting to use their advantages isn't a challenge. Effortlessly outing the politicians that were working to sell the JSDF out to other political bodies isn't challenging. Knowing that at any point in time they can take down any threat !Rome can muster isn't challenging.
If there is no difficulty to their progress, just the JSDF progressing on their terms exclusively how is that an interesting conflict? It's just the narrative trying to convince you there is some significant obstacle when none exists.
>using modern tech to conquer another shit world
>"oh mah weeb medieval age comes to idolize nippon propaganda"
>can't even Sup Forums
>many unnecessary stupid things happen
>using slang JSDF many times, but making it looks like shit
better using their taxes to clone themselves to avoid extinction rather than conquer that shit world
Japan is described in this anime as in the Last samurai movie, not every country is fucking america who spreads "freedom" and bombs the shit out of everything like they have done before, and say the did a good job and a nice work in whatever country the bombed
thanks user, i couldn't remember the name. have a (You)
this
>not every country is fucking america who spreads "freedom" and bombs the shit out of everything like they have done before
You do realize that the complaint was that the JSDF has an unchecked advantage in this scenario which sucks the tension from any meaningful conflict? Nobody advocated for a Michael Bay movie.
I agree with people on here are way to quick to assume that it's an American informed background that causes people to not like this show when in realitu, the show is like any LN. A decent premise with poor execution and waifu pandering power.
Would have been better if it focused more on military fights/occupation, politics, and cultural differences instead of Harems, Leleis college, and vacations.
Also would have been better if they got to the point where China supplies Imperial insurgents with guns and training
Guerilla warfare can also be done in any town.
Lure a patrol in an ally, stab them, loot them, begone to Fleabottom again. With stuff like this they could have gotten their hands on at least a few firearms, which then again could be used more or less effectivly( doesn't need to win anything. Only that they were able to do it gives tension).
You said it. Magic is inefficent as fuck. To make it a tick more interesting they could have given a tick more interesting magic powers. Doesn't need to summon earthquakes but a sleeping spell would already be huge.
The manga character designs are also better.
>In favor of forming an international organization to jointly manage the Gate
Yeah, a mix out of Disneys Atlantis and Stargate Atlantis might have been great.
I hate A-1 and their shitty redesigns.
>japan propaganda
Another thread on this shit?
Mods what the fuck.
You really don't like westerners engaging with Sup Forums.
Having Gate threads without people focusing on it just being japan propaganda would be nice.
If you don't understand that war is only an inefficient way of diplomacy, you can't enjoy this manga.
There was just another thread about some guy rambling about war propaganda.
I don't have a problem enjoying the manga i've stuck with it for years. But I recognize there is a lot of fake tension related to how the JSDF approaches things. I'd like the story more if !Rome was a more capable opponent or if the JSDF actually struggled with the terrain or wildlife. But even the red dragon was shown to be vulnerable to a simple rocket launcher in the first encounter which sets a precedence for what type of opposition they would meet. And the diplomacy isn't even that interesting as the intrigue doesn't go that far.
One sided fights are boring whether the nips write it or the americans.
The fun part about this shit is that women getting all over the dick of their conquerors is historically accurate.
>All i remember reading was "japan propaganda"
You're thinking about the novels.
>shitty Rory anime designs
I watched it for the CQC tomboy and cute mage girl.
Not enough screen time for both of them tho.
The premise is great and fun, I think it gets the tag of jsdf propaganda unjustly, if the goal was "real life country clashes with fantasy world", any other army from a free country would have behaved in a similar situation.
Where it fails is after the fantasy world sends a delegation to the real world, because after that the series quickly becomes fanservicy which doesn't fits with the tone at all. At the end it is halfway a harem anime (and the waifus are bad too).
Rory's design change wasn't good, but she is much closer to the manga than many of the side characters.
More Lelei is always good. It would be nice to have more art for her like Rory gets. There was not nearly enough doujin for Gate, though the anime design differences didn't help.
I always just view it as modern country vs. fantasy country. For that, the names of earth countries are generally just interchangeable since that's not the interesting part.
...
Having read the manga and ignored the show, I'm so glad I'm a manga only fag. That is physically revolting.
...
>The only magic powerful enough to be a threat to the JISDF is the one wielded by semi-divine beings
Note that my daughter Lelei managed to incorporate knowledge of Jap explosives into her magic to create actual artillery-tier explosions. Can't remember if they shown it in the anime
I also wish for a second season but probably never, im also still wating for the second season of the legend of the legendary heroes....sigh
>can't post all the lewd mangaka drawings because mods are nazis and will ban me again
guerilla warfare would still be inefficient in towns, when the JSDF themselves are doing it with much better equipment and tactics.
Best chance would be in forests, but with trackers and snipers in the JDSF, it's honestly a very uphill battle.
Watching a Tolkien influenced, history inspired high fantasy horse shit of a universe get stomped by a modern military made my dick diamonds.
10/10 eagerly waiting for next season.
When the fuck is Gisselle coming back
There don't seem to have been as many made in the last year as previously. Most are Rory, which is nice, but it would having more of the other characters as well. There have been a few of Rory in particular that I would like to have other characters in the same pose.
Oh we're doing a manga art dump?
One half of the series is pathetic otaku pandering with the harem bullshit (Lelei was the only character worth anything in the harem for narrative´s sake, and that includes Itami), and the other is nationalistic shit (who didn´t notice avoiding any reference to Japanese crimes in WWII even when it would have been extremely appropriate? ). It is just very mediocre, and it was hard to finish even for the military otaku in me who watched this just for the sweet, sweet "fantasy getting BTFOed" material. We didn´t get nearly enough of that.
The series should have been Fantasy Generation Kill, or Japanese Green Berets teaching elves about machinegun ballistics and their application against not-Romans.
I for one am ready for the year of the dog
He seems to like Wolf guy recently. That and big fat cat tats.

>The series should have been Fantasy Generation Kill, or Japanese Green Berets teaching elves about machinegun ballistics and their application against not-Romans.
So basically drifters?
>That and big fat cat tats.
One of the few authors holding up my particular fetishes.
Horribly dissapointing. Goth loli is the only reason to watch it.
>So basically drifters?
Sure, why not? I mean, Drifters is pretty damn basic about that, but if the guy writing GATE truly was ex-military, he could have gone pretty in-depth about that kind of stuff, and figured out ways fantasy races could make them work in new, interesting ways.
People like this? shit is ugly
>mangafags are STILL buttblasted
An interesting character, but when hoping for more art, not my first choice.
I really liked it, especially the vibe of worlds adjusting to each other, characters and some cool moments. By the end though they played the "high stakes" scenario that didn't feel all that high and while i was rooting for the girl it still felt like a hollow way to end the series, especially considering that they treated it like a proper ending with everybody getting paired up and such. Still it's easily re-watchable for me as a SoL-like thing.
I think we've spoken on this subject in previous threads but I would also like to see it be more about a modern army equipping and training a fantasy country and vice versa. Beast men leading night operations. Mage collaborating with artillery and mortar rounds. Elves and special forces stalking through the forests with a mix of bows and rifles. Instead of making it about a curb stomp, make it about two worlds collaborating their resources together to beat a greater enemy.
If you defend anything from A-1 your opinion is discarded. When a studio recycles their own style and ignores the source they have failed at an adaptation.
>left
cute as fuck
>right
looks like a dude
SoL is really the only point when there is a large power difference. Having the occasional crushing of a weaker opponent is fine, but gets old quickly. Combining magic and science for military and non-military purposes is ideal though.
>ignores the source
The source is an LN, which the anime follows more closely than the manga.
Yeah not really though. They got Rory and Itami but the rest of the cast was pretty altered and moe-fied as per the Studio's track record. And even Rory still looks different than the LN release as they only got her outfit mostly correct.
All of them look on par with the LN
How can Japan even compete?
how are the novels and the translations? they caught up or no?
Overall I prefer the manga designs, though that could be just from reading that first. The LN are about as good in general. The novel faces look deformed. Of those anime designs shown, while not completely bad, they seem too simplified like many more current anime designs.
You're not looking at the proportions of the face then. Especially if you've seen the rest of the character models how their bodies are laid out.
Is it being translated? haven't found any it last time I checked
I assumed it was. is it not? dam want to know how the series goes after the anime.
just checked NU and it's translated up to v9
not sure how far in that is
>the legend of the legendary heroes season 2
English translation when
>>right
>prone to gold-digging thoughts
>easily swayed by shiny rocks
>research going nowhere
>job about to be outsourced
>gets beat by sister in academics
>gets beat by sister in three-night custom
Why is Alfe so perfect?
can anyone reading it tell how far in the story the translations are at and if the adaptations are good enough that you can skip reading what they covered? or if it's a good read to begin with
It really shouldn't surprise you that animefags don't actually know shit about artwork or illustration.
Or decent design
Or taste
Or life
I'm just starved for tacticool anime, so I thought it was alright.
Personal highlight was a certain scene early on, wherein the JSDF dismounted from their vehicles and it seemed smooth as hell.
>LN Kuribayashi: Baby Face Big Boobs
>Manga Kuribayashi: Mature woman
>Anime Kuribayashi: Oppai loli
I wish to know more.
>>Manga Kuribayashi: Mature woman
And I like it this way honestly.
