I haven't kept up with all the interviews but I remember Yuasa explained that they did a few changes to the original story. Nagai himself said that it feels like a correct depiction of his own Devilman.

There is A love story between Akira and Ryo, but from what I've gathered from interviews the main changes being made to their relationship is basically just going to be more of it shown to the viewers, shit like them as children as well as them as classmates.

Sure, but to keep in the sort of tragic nature of Ryo's love for Akira, I doubt there will be any real reciprocation on Akira's part, and certainly not any kind of gay sex scenes.

She was introduced after Akira made his infamous announcement to the readers that the story would go beyond him and start to include all society and even going to global scale.
