So interested in doing the Gantz thing. Missed out on the hype but looking for a nice long manga to go through. A few chapters into the manga already. How far do I need to go before watching Gantz: 0 without getting spoiled? Is the anime even worth touching? Is the manga worth reading?

>How far do I need to go before watching Gantz: 0 without getting spoiled?
Chapter 200 something
>Is the anime even worth touching?
Nope! It's incredibly slow, season 1 covers maybe the first couple volumes and Kei is insufferable. Season 2 pretty much does it's own thing, non canonical.
>Is the manga worth reading?
You can read better, but you can also read a whole lot worse. The series gets insane half way through, so if you were interested in it as a serious series don't bother.

The anime differs after the third nission, so is a original adaptation. Follow the manga, the osaka part is a much later arc. Be patient.

>The series gets insane half way through, so if you were interested in it as a serious series don't bother.
Can you clarify on that a bit without giving too much away?

boobs

Dinosaurs, vampires, aliens

A lot of things happen and very little of it is explained. Don't expect any kins of competent writing. It's essentially a 12 year olds list of ideas that he thinks are cool thrown on a page.

Oh, and you'll never grown an attachment to any of the characters because they're either absolute scum of the earth, or they die before you really get enough time with them.

Do they ever explain what Gantz is?

Yeah, but it's not some fantastic reveal. If you go in expecting any good pay offs to any unanswered questions you won't get them.

The anime is worth checking out

So there is a lot of these between chapters. Does it ever go fuck blown lewd?

Kei Kurono dies

I think there's one every chapter.

>Does it ever go fuck blown lewd?
Oh boy you're in for a ride.

WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOUR FAAAAAAAACE?

It's called "scowling".

>So there is a lot of these between chapters. Does it ever go fuck blown lewd?

>ADULT ATTACK ADULT ATTACK!

It has a lot of those. I'm not a big fan but it was never unbearable, not even plotwise and there are a lot too like the vampires or Kurono's brother. It still has great moments, the characters are interesting, Kurono grows on you and shit's fun. It has a panda and dinosaurs, what's not to like?

>what's not to like
Any interesting character gets killed off before they have time to shine and you're always left with the shitty ones.

That's actually true.
Like it was said earlier in the thread: You can read better, but you can also read a whole lot worse

True. I didn't really like Gantz but I was kept around until the ending, which is unusual for me. Usually I have no issue dropping things I'm not into.

I thought there was some genuinely good character development during the second major arc.

It just feels like Oku introduced certain questions and characters without having any idea of what he wanted to do with them in the final stretch of the story.

It would have been better to leave Gantz a mystery I think. So much of the fun of following Gantz's releases as the chapters were coming out were all the crazy theories people had. The series was just nuts and we were trying to make sense of it. All the reveals really killed so much of that kind of discussion when the series attempted to answer most of the questions people had.

>I thought there was some genuinely good character development during the second major arc
Oni mission should have been adapted instead of Osaka mission. Too bad.

I get the impression he never really knew what he wanted to do with the story. Like what the hell was the point of those vampires in the larger narrative?

I think it was to show that given that the vampires were just alien related the aliens actually adapted into earth thus Gantz just taking care of the military forces of the alien invasion but not the species itself.
Or maybe he just thought they were cool and didn't know how to integrate them into the story. Like the other teams, that could have been a really good and long arc with another mangaka. Instead of that the shit goes full invasion no time to spare and shit.

I'd honestly love to see another writers take on Gantz. Doubt it would ever happen though.

I thought the vampires were interesting at first. With the whole idea that Kei and his team were safe outside of the hunts starting to fade. It added tension that they couldn't escape anymore, whether or not they were on a hunt.

Just wish that they gave the main vamps actual backstory and motivation beyond being the stoic people that hated Gantzers. I expected things to come to a head after all the death they cause,
but they were just sort of there after a while.
And the fact that Kei's brother's death is never brought up again is kind of awkward.

Oni > Dino > Buddha > Osaka > Chibi > Ring/Tae > Tanaka > Onion > Italy >>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Katastrophe

"I thought it was interesting at first" can be applied to everything in the manga for me.

Italy was potential insanely wasted. Such a missed opportunity.

>muscle rider
>old man
you're mostly right but you're still wrong.

I really liked the way that the Tae mission basically boiled down to a civil war where every character takes a moment to decide where they stand. Some are scum that don't care, some are too frightened to risk themselves for another, and some are bros that don't even hesitate to throw away everything to back up Kurono.

Didn't really like how it was live and let live at the end of it though. I get that fighting any more than necessary was usually considered pointless. but they literally had a group of murdering gang rapists walking out the door and showing up for the next mission, and there was no follow up on anything regarding their victim being on the team or anyone else showing concern over it afterwards.

Anime is pretty good for what it is. It's somewhat expands on manga material, but only the first 3 fights were touched + abrupt ending fight.
Also, the hobo from Gantz anime was redone in Inuyashiki.

Don't forget about "Super Buddha".
Got most of the way through, but never really understood what the fuck was up with the panda. Does it even go over that, or is the poor fucker left to overcook on the backburner?

I still believe that Gantz had the best solution to a love triangle right before Katastrophe starts. Then Katastrophe shits on it all, eats it, and shits it up a second time. And fuck Hitler-God alien for not just doing it again, but x3 to give Lara Croft a happy ending.

I thought the anime had its moments, but it kind of hurt the pacing of some of the action sequences when they added scenes to have everyone stop to start talking during a life-or-death moment.

Decent animation and great music though. Would have liked to have seen them go beyond the first few missions.

I thought Reika was straight up insane when she did what she did.

But damn, I was still bitter about how much she got screwed over in the end. They couldn't even give her the courtesy of showing her last fight on-screen.

does clone kurono really try to rape her but then give up when she enjoys it?

To show everyone what happens when someone being hunted by Gantz, gets teleported by Gantz. The Kei death arc and Osaka arc were basically set up to show that not all the monsters the Gantzers killed couldn't be reasoned with, yet naturally it wouldn't be so convenient that the coincidental first species to do so would just naturally turn into allies.

That said I think they got left out simply because Oku wanted to wrap it up and just went with a generic independence day arc. It was rather obvious he ramped up the pace super fast and whether it was because he was told to, or he himself wanted to, it was a clear divide from what was happening earlier.

I mean it doesn't even explain how the aliens and gantz suit works. The giant aliens by nature should be a lot stronger simply because of sheer size, even if they were all equivalent to basement dwelling nerds they should have easily been able to make up for it in sheer muscle mass just like how a baby would still crush an ant with ease.

And yet when Gantz suit vs Gantz suit applies, it seems the giant aliens benefit zilch from the suits compared to the likes of Kurono. It boggles the mind. Which means aside from God who moves faster than the speed of thought, host samurai is the fastest character in the story and he's not even dressed to fight. That's fucked up.

>Just wish that they gave the main vamps actual backstory and motivation beyond being the stoic people that hated Gantzers.
They were being hunted and therefore wanted to hunt the Gantzers back and take the initiative. It was part of the arc itself where they had power points showing the Gantzers and were the perspective of the hunted trying to learn about their hunters in order to turn the tables on them.

Lara croft is best girl

Lewds are the best part.

You clever mother fucker

The panda never returned from the Italy mission.

Even though the manga becomes a complete clusterfuck after the vampires, it still has some very good moments. The only actually weak arc all around is katastrophe.
Only the first season of the anime is worth watching, avoid the second like the plague.
Risking to spoil the manga is not worth it, considering the best thing about gantz:0 is reika's cg tits. Just watch after you're done with the manga.
