I didnt dislike Crybaby, and it is the best version of Devilman ive read or seen, but man, I really thought Yuasa dropped the ball with making a scene have the most impact it could possibly have, and the scene youre posting is a perfect example of him dropping the ball in my opinion
That fantasy from Miki's perspective was so hamfisted for me.
To summarize
Miki getting stabbed the way she did did not pay off. The passing the baton part just didnt make sense. What exactly was Miki passing on to Akira? They never had a relationship where the symbol of passing something on has weight. Them being together and close could have symbolic weight, but the baton is not that. Then her getting stabbed is in slomo with her face not moving, which didnt work for me. Then you have Devilman running to Miki while this is happening because he all of a sudden says he has to go running for Miki because her staying alive is the only thing keeping him human. This just happens, when hes in a volcano after a fight. Im pretty sure he never said this at any point before then, and he just had an important moment where other humans were beginning to trust him by hugging him. Did that have no effect on him? Did that scene just not happen? Then Devilman catches up to the house where the people decided to bring back the bodies? And the way the thugs who went against their own are presented is just strange. I get that they were just going with the mob to save their skin but it doesnt work. It wasnt setup properly to make sense.
This is the setup for Devilman freaking out at his lowest point. All this failure in setup really killed it for me.
Then credits
Then the fantasy from a dead Miki which doesnt make sense. The romance between Miki and Akira never got to the point where her post mortem fantasy is being with him. Her fantasizing about being with her family and Akira being there as well would have made sense.
So many moments in the show were like this to me.
