Basilisk was and still is fairly successful on pachinko.
Rumor has it (from Gonzo's 2ch thread) that Gonzo, which has stakes in the pachinko machines (which are based on the anime) were caught embezzling their pachinko income so that they wouldn't have to pay Kodansha (that owns the rights to the source material) their dues.
And thus King Records decided to make the new anime so they could make new basilisk pachinko machines that don't involve Gonzo.
