Architect here, it's something that's bothered me about MiA. The town has such an unrealistic development, A town wouldn't develop around a hole in the middle of it. it would grow next to it, with it's main activity hub close to it, but and maybe a ring around the void with less develop stuff would grow with progressively less stuff as it gets further away from the main population center. Just like your pic.

It might be medieval but the principles are the same A castle except for when it was in lock down, it could serve as a hub, and when in lock down the population would be inside of it anyway. The crater technically is the reason of being of the town, but it's scale is such that it's hard to call it a hub rather than an obstacle between sections of the town. But it's a minor gripe, so it's not like it matters.
