I think it's a bit unfair to say that Yuasa is all about style just because he has an unique art and animation style. Shows like Tatami Galaxy, Kaiba and even Devilman to some extent tells a deeper story than most anime out there.

Answer to OP is both. I can enjoy both. But a visual medium should look good, otherwise I'll read a fucking book which is vastly superior medium anyway.

Style is substance. Anime is a visual medium.

And while there are several KyoAni works I'm not fond of (Kyoukai no Kanata especially), I've never been convinced that their average output has worse writing than the average output of any other modern anime studio. Also they get points for a good work culture in an industry and country where they normally get fucked hard.

Go Nagai works are basically the manga equivalent of exploitation films, though Devilman is probably the only one with an actual message and themes even if it’s wrapped in a completely absurd story

The extreme content isn’t really a problem so much as the story not taking itself as seriously as such a dark premise really should. I mean the “MY DAD IS DEAD” should be evidence of how the manga standards of the time and Go’s own writing style really hamper the early bits of Devilman.
