Has it been explained what's going on yet or is the author keeping that a secret?

So far what's been explained is that a secret organization was conducting experiments on the zoo animals, trying to give the animals human faces in order to develop their reasoning and communication skills(our expressive faces and eyes are why humans are able to communicate so well and build civilization, technology, etc). They were doing this by mixing human and animal DNA, this somehow resulted in an airborne DNA virus that ended up effecting all the animals around the zoo as well. The fact that the human/animal hybrids are showing up makes it seem like the experiments were being done as some sort of forced evolution project to combine the best aspects of both humans and animals--one of the characters also suggests this, saying it was being done to ensure humans could survive environmental changes. There's also been some stuff about mind control, referencing LSD experiments, not sure where that is leading but there was one part where the animals are shown to be controlled by the sound of a siren.
