ITT: Post series that have immense popularity in Japan but not the west
It's immensely popular in all of Asia though, at least in Hong Kong as well.
Tama is the best character too.
but why?
It's too Japanese.
I mean why make this thread
Because I wanted to make a thread.
Sazae-san too.
So, infant show thread?
>Maruko
>infant
Actually friend, it's shoujo.
Kyojin no Hoshi
Also literally anything by Adachi that isn’t Cross Game.
kimi no na wa
>it's a swimsuit episode
Shin-chan
That’s definitely popular outside of Japan though, thanks to the various dubs.
sazae-san
>J2
You watch the Cantonese dub too? I prefer it much more than the Japanese voices.
...
...
Yeah I downloaded then from YT years ago because i wanted some HD episodes.
>It's a Maruko's feet episode
...
Nice. Must take up a lot of space.
Tama's canto VA still amazes me to remain the same for over 20 years.
Only about 200mb each.
I hate how they give Tama those stupid black dot eyes instead of normal Maruko eyes.
Conan. I seriously don't get the appeal.
I've only watch the episode from the 90s. It's comfy.
Just gotta savor every moment you get glasses-less Tama at this point.
Laos gotta savor the extremely rare naked Sakiko.
are the new episodes ever any good? I've only watched the old stuff
It's extremely repetitious and the character designs are cheap and squatty, with the occasional good episode here and there.
No subgroup wants to commit subbing a 182 episode show that very few people will end up watching.
I would definitely watch it but others wouldnt unless it's popularity spreads through word of mouth in similar fashion to Ashita no Joe.
A sub group committed to subbing Attack no 1 though, and that's 104 episodes.
>No Ashita no Joe or more Adachi outside of Cross Game but we get fucking Kuroko no Basket
Why must we suffer in the west suffer when it comes to sports manga? I'd love for Joe to get a respectful release like a really good hardcover edition 3-1.
...
I love Maya
...
a lot of classic shoujo is lost on the West, for some reason
I badly want this and Seven Seeds released in English especially since both are ending soon.
Speaking of shoujo weren't we supposed to be getting a Rose of Versailles omnibus collection? I'm 100% some company has licensed the mangaka's other works since I distinctly recall seeing one in my LCS at some point.
>glass mask
>ending soon
how long has miuchi been saying that now?
Mazinger (outside Italy and France), Cyborg 009, Tetsujin 28, Gegege no Kitarou.
Mostly long running stuff intended for kids
Isn’t Nausicaa really huge in Japan? I feel like it’s not as important outside of it.
I only know this one because a lot of anime reference it.
Doraemon
Isn't it popular in Europe? I see it on TV all the time whenever I go to Spain so it must still be getting broadcasted.
Surprisingly it's pretty popular here in the middle east.
Doraemon
Seems like it's popular everywhere but America. It's a cultural icon over here in Asia.
It had an Animax dub back in the day though, but I think they only dubbed the first few seasons and not the currently ongoing series.
...
Maruko-chan also aired in germany and I have fond memories of it. Same with Shin-chan.
And they're doing God's work.
I love shin chan for it's wackyness and pervy moments from time to time.
I remember watching it a bit here and there as well.
Thanks Germany. Without you I wouldn't know what anime is.
Speaking of which I always found it odd that the intro to Mila features her getting pummeled to shit with balls.
Does this count?
No, iirc it was quite popular in the west. If someone like Ashens can recognize it, then it at least aired in the UK.
>Shin-chan.
Shin-chan was bought by FoxKids/Jetix tv channel back in the days thinking it was a family show for the young audiences that wouldn't be so 'vulgar' as they eventually found out.
Little kids of 5-6 would do the ass boogy or whatever it was called in English or even Japanese.
They only had a couple seasons cause the show was kicked off the air eventually but it stayed on it long enough cause it was so popular.
I don't think it's that weird, it's a nice symbolic presentation of the struggles she faces. Thinking back to it, Mila had some pretty harsh scenes. I distinctly remember a girl punching a tree so much until she bled, in order to toughen up her hands.
>Nausicaa
>one movie
user we're talking about series with thousands of episodes/chapters that are still running and immensely popular among the population of Japan despite never getting talked about here.
Kochikame hands down.
Srsly
That's probably the strongest contender, next to Sazae-san.
>It's a nude episode
delete this
...
Really???
...
I still remember my time reading official Viet scans of Doraemon for my past time whenever I get home from school. It was pretty much the only thing I ever looked for everytime I'm in a library.
Being able to browse all that online and finish it off a decade later; that was an absolutely enjoyable experience.
not him but i wouldnt be surprised. to most westerners, yuyuyu is nothing but a madoka "rip-off", when it fact anyone with a shred of anime knowledge immediately realizes that it takes most of its inspiration from fafner, symphogear and getter robo, all shows that are more popular in japan than they are in the west.
It's kind of popular in Italy, our local TVs dubbed lots of animes in that period.
