I honestly greatly prefer the OPs/EDs for the dub. Both are ripoffs of Neil Sedaka songs anyway and kind of like with 08th MS Team's OP I don't think either really works well with the series at all either. Especially not the OP footage.
Granted it's a bit cheating in that they're already in-series songs but the NA release having to change them was a blessing since what we wound up getting is 50x better.

OP basically tells you that you're in for an epic war drama and goes with the animation. The ED works as a nice way to cool down from the episode, especially after the more intense ones.

As far as anime openings go, anything not good is shit. What makes an anime opening good?
1. Good music (subjective, but we all know what bad music sounds like)
2. Original animation (using clips from the show spoils it and is also very lazy)
3. Unique layout (I don't want to see character introductions, many characters are introduced later in the series, it doesn't make sense seeing them in the OP)
4. Adaptive (a truely good OP changes a little every episode to adapt to the plot)
5. Vagueness (A good OP should be as vague as possible, hyping up the audience while revealing the least as possible about the anime)
6. Change (the OP should change at least every season)
