I'm currently watching this shit, and it's fucking awful. I guess people liked it at the time for being a relatively light-hearted fantasy anime.

I think it did, but I'm also nostalgic for 90s anime.

I rewatched it last year for the first time in nearly 20 years, and I liked it even more than I used to. I think it has a special charm that not many series have, and that's mainly due to the unique and lively characters.

I First watched it maybe 6 or 7 years ago and enjoyed it.

I saw this in spanish when I was a kid, the dub is ok, but finding it today means that you'll be hearing VHS-tier sound quality. I tried the english dub and it's pretty bad. That said

I'm fine with any alternative pairing for Lina as long as it isn't Zel/Lina, because he belongs to Amelia.

When I was in Japan last month I saw a ton of Xellos/Lina doujinshi in the stores and hardly any for other pairings for some reason.

I have a feeling the reason there were so many is that it's not actually that popular of a pairing, but the doujinka who are into it happen to be very prolific. And they still make new X/L doujins even now. There should be more coming out at the next Slayers only doujin event in April.

Be aware that this is an upscale and not a remaster.

What order should i watch them in?

Should I start with the OVAs? Should I skip anything?

Production order is also fine. There isn't much of a timeline to the anime except that the OVAs/movies with Naga take place before the TV series, and then the TV seasons go in production order (with Premium supposed to take place between Next and Try, although it's mostly gags so it doesn't really matter where it goes)

Next is widely considered the peak of Slayers, and it goes downhill from there. Although I would say even Slayers at its worst is still more entertaining than 90% of seasonal anime.

I just want Slayers Reading (And everything outside of the main LN series for that matter) to get translated. One thing I have to give Kanzaka credit for, especially in the LNs, is the world building and how consistent he made things.

But the X/L doujinka I know of write mushy love stories. I think rape suits him better though.
I think the G/L and Z/A doujins are the ones in highest demand and X/L was just what was leftover.

Slayers Reading is just a rehash of Slayers Encyclopedia which had a lot more information.
I have copies of that and the compilations of Blaster and I want to translate them eventually, also Kanzaka's monthly update on the Mega Brand blog. (I will update my translation of Royal soon; I've just been busy and have had computer troubles so I haven't had access to Photoshop lately. I apologize for not updating the site in several months.)

They're okay, definitely better than most light novels. The best thing about them is the world-building information. But I think they fall far short of the anime in character development. Personally I'm glad the anime wasn't a straight adaptation of the novels because we got to see so many more facets of the characters.

Yes, a lot of it plays out differently too if you're afraid of treading the same ground.

Yes. They are honestly better written than the show, but have kind of a different focus. Read them so you can see how things are supposed to go rather than sit with what we got with R/Evolution.

I wonder if the rights ever reverted away from Tokyopop. They still exist apparently. If they still have the rights, then I doubt anyone else will be able to get their hands on them.
Even if they don't, publishing companies generally don't like to do license rescues, and an old and long series like Slayers probably won't be as attractive to pick up compared to the latest flavor-of-the-month isekai LN.

I watch it like every two years and go through the whole thing each time. Certainly think the beginning is a bit slow, but yeah, no way to know how much nostalgia is affecting your opinion of something.

The first season didn't age well. The rest is pretty much as good as it ever was. It's the definitive lighthearted fantasy adventure.
