what's the correct approach to this?

should translators cater to veterans who are familiar with some Japanese terms or try to dumb it down for everyone?

sauce?

Translators should give me sauce is what

1 >= 2 >> powergap >> 3

On a related note, putting "freshman" or "sophomore" or any related term in a manga translation is just fucking stupid.

First bubble from middle, second bubble from right.

They should just leave the impossible to translate stuff untranslated and add notes at the end. Especially honorifics. In this case I prefer the numerical age, it's more telling than the grade.

3>2>>>>I know that's probably 'chuugakusei' but mid-school is a vague term.

> when asked how old she is, she responds she's in 中二 grade
> if you translate this how the author intended it'll look like you botched it

what's wrong with just writing 1st grade, 5th grade, 12th grade, etc?

>what's wrong with just writing 1st grade, 5th grade, 12th grade, etc?
It just makes me convert in my head to which year of which school, because I'm not from a country that counts grades like that. Also, it's not how it is in the original so why change it?

>Also, it's not how it is in the original so why change it?

because >mid-school is a vague term

I'm not American so I don't know how they count grades, but I'm pretty sure they don't use Japan's education system. I want to know what the closest/more familiar term would be. 2nd grade in junior-high?

Hey buddy, can I get some sauce on that?

It's not really vague, in context. If it's a japanese middle school then you know exactly how old they are because of how the japanese school system is. If it's not in Japan then it's gonna be as confusing in japanese as it is in english, which is fine.

>I'm not American so I don't know how they count grades, but I'm pretty sure they don't use Japan's education system. I want to know what the closest/more familiar term would be. 2nd grade in junior-high?
That's the problem with translating like that, I don't know the american system either and I think I shouldn't need to know it to read manga.

I will give you source to both if you answer my question. I'm still not sure which I should use for my translation. I don't want it to sound too literal, but also not too far from the original text.

Due to differences in school systems it is best to just say "second year middle school". Trying to guess what "second year middle school" means in Japan is useless. They have 6 year primary school.

Second one might be just straight up wrong. From other two I prefer the first. "But I don't know how Japanese education works" isn't really a valid argument.

Presuming it's set in Japan then I agree with Though I'd probably just write "Middle school, second grade", because "mid-school" sounds weird to me.

For I agree with As for the OP, I prefer either 1 or 3
I don't really give a shit about age, it's porn anyways

thanks, I'm satisfied with those answers

Whatever you do, don't do that shit
It's one thing if the publisher has to do it for legal reasons, but you don't
