Who cares about any of that. Gunbuster is about humanity being resolved to sacrifice everything to destroy the enemy. We also see this on a more personal level at the end with Noriko ripping her metaphorical heart out.
Diebuster is basically the same in this aspect, except the presence of Nono equates to "it's fine, there is no need to destroy yourself", as long as you keep your heart you can make things work.
It's why Diebuster works so well as a sequel.
