We had like one episode to see her after this happened. And with the level of familiarity and preparedness she has with the abyss, her injuries are exactly what she expected. I would say it'll be a bit longer before things start to add up and she can't force herself to be happy anymore.

The entire point of the show is that the same thing can be both good/bright/happy/beautiful and bad/dark/sad/ugly at the same time. That's why the MCs are children. It would be a much different show with much different themes if they were teenagers or adults instead.

(Also them being children makes it clearer that the wonderment people have for the Abyss is childlike. Which doesn't necessarily make it wrong or bad, quite the opposite.)

As others have said, the narrative makes it clear that their society has an entirely different view of death and children are raised to just accept it as the natural order so as to not fear diving into the hell hole to fuel the country's economy
Having the story be told from the POV of bright-eyed children adds a sense of wonder and adventure that you just couldn't get from older characters. Its also what keeps the narrative from getting too edgy by having them constantly wallow in the misery of their fucked up situation.
