Holy shit this was bad. Rarely have I seen such an interesting setting be wasted in such manner.

the OST was wasted too. at least it was a good spring board for Kylie to get some singles out there
Best girl won
that's all that was good about it

was a mess, certainly. the release especially, was like some Sony exclusive thing.
but it did have some nice things. Soundtrack, animation, characters, art/designs/settings. Some of the concepts were neat too.
But as a whole it was just a mess.
IT'S ABOUT TO EXPLODE!!!!!!
Loved this ED, too bad the version I watched had the other one...
youtube.com
I liked it more than eureka 7
The entire second half was awful.
>Rarely have I seen such an interesting setting be wasted in such manner.
I take it you haven't watched much anime
I have, but rarely have I seen such an interesting setting. The overall approach was incredibly creative which is something that is very rare at this point. The only recent entry that I can think of, that had a setting as interesting as Xamd, would be Dragon Dentist. Outside of that, not much to even choose from.
All I know it has the same character designer as devilman crybaby.
The other one being the flip flappers director.
I can't believe the guy who sung that fucking died
>leave your lemon drop
Truly a lyrical jesus
Kurashima did Crybaby? I didn't watch it, but I never would have guessed from the images I saw. I preferred her not-Yoshida style.
May he RIP in peace
I just watched a few episodes of it myself. I was pretty fine with the opening episode, but even 5 episodes in I could tell it would be a mess. It's a huge shame because of its ridiculously high production values.
I liked the bad guy in it. Honestly it had the same problem with Eureka 7 I thought they would've learned by then
> it had the same problem with Eureka 7
Really? What? I love E7, but the main complaints I see about it are Renton's immaturity and it being too long, whereas Xam'd was clearly too short for all the stuff they tried to cram in there.
It's actually one of my all-time favorite anime. It has a beautiful story which expertly interweaves multiple plot threads driven by fully-realized characters and compelling themes into the perfect concluding act.
Unfortunately, I'm just starting work, so I'll have to leave my thoughts at that.
>whereas Xam'd was clearly too short for all the stuff they tried to cram in there
agreed. they tried to cramp too many different sideplots into the show without ever properly explaining any of them. character dont have the time or freedom to truly develop organically, the ending is abrupt and most aspects are truly elaborated on, let alone explained in a satisfactory manner. i honestly believe that this show had the potential to be one of the greatest anime in the history of the medium. the overall direction and concepts ooze more creativity than almost anything over the last decade, but the execution was so piss poor that its infuriating. most shows cant even fill a single cour without it feeling like a drag, and then you have those that are so inspired that they should get 50, but only get half. xamd has more unique sights and concepts over the course of its 26eps than e7 had in 50. goddamn fucking bones, really.
Nakiami is mai waifu, she's stuck for 1000 years inside a dome in a shit show I'll never rewatch.
>those that are so inspired that they should get 50, but only get half
Honestly, two cour was all it needed, they just had to cut out either the hometown plot or the Empire plot. Even with fifty episodes, those two stories had almost nothing to do with each other and wouldn't have meshed very well.
I just watched half of it and dropped because it was fucking boring.
Does it get better?
here. This sums up my feelings on the show, except that it clicked with me and therefore attained the lofty heights that to you were left as unrealized potential.
i read your post but it has virtually no value to me. might have to do with the fact that its a 2 liner without any substance. i also think that this bit
>fully-realized characters
reads like bait, but that might just be me. how furuichi, ishu or even haru are supposed to be "fully realized" is a myth to me. not even akiyuki truly is, especially considering how random some of the personality changes were that had hardly any room to develop.
I just hated the ambiguous ending. I'm usually fine with open ends but the mood is so different depending on what happened that I can't take it.
Could have been better, still liked it quite a bit. Animation was gorgeous most of time.
you pretty much said it all, user.
the idea was good, the setting was great, but oh boy, the execution was absolute thrash.
It gets worse actually.
The problem with Xam'd is that everyone went into it with the wrong expectations (that it would be an action anime), when it's just not (the OP and pr didn't exactly help correcting that assumption). This probably created massive viewer blue balls and they (and should) probably have invested more into the action.
Xam'd has some excellent character moments though. My personal favorite character was the doctor dad. I really need to rewatch it one day to better appreciate it.
Eh sorry user I'm not trying to bait you or anything.
With that said, I do have to disagree about Haru and Ishuu. Haru's journey through the military and dealing with Toujirou, what she learned about the Xam'd, and then her commitment to go off in search of Akyuki, struck me as an intelligent depiction of a young woman learning about hidden complexity in the world she wasn't previously aware of, and then acting with that understanding in mind to save a friend. Ishuu strongly evoked a woman caught between her role as a mother to a daughter slipping from her grasp, and a warrior.
Furuichi I'll admit there's less of a case for. He's more single-minded and obsessive. Although, I think he was still compelling to watch, including his stunning demise.
