COBRA
>Jump space opera
>Plot: the interstellar travels of Cobra, one of most legendary space pirates of galaxy
>Terasawa (author) was one of Osamu Tezuka disciples
>First Jump manga which setting wasn't current Earth

Forgot anime opening youtube.com/watch?v=rZzpp4xZw0c

KINNIKUMAN

>By Yudetamago
>It was going to be a superhero gag manga, turned into a fantasy pro wrestling action manga 'cause Ring ni Kakero influence (Yudetamago were friends of Kurumada)
>Plot: the adventures of clumsy superhero Muscleman
>A lot of wrest movings in Japan are named after this manga
>36 volumes, it lasted almost al the entire 80s decade
>First Jump manga to continue after having ended

youtube.com/watch?v=f8nIkz_cdt0

DR.SLUMP

>By Akira Toriyama, the man, the legend
>Plot: gag comedy about little robot Arale
>After a long hiatus (after Isamu I think) it was first Jump manga to get anime, making possible for Cobra, Kinnikuman, Hokuto no Ken, etc to get anime adaptations thanks to its big success
>TV anime was LONG

Again, forgot to add anime opening youtube.com/watch?v=hTFuh5fjFc0

So this is the era of the first big hits.

SANNEN KIMENGUMI/HIGH SCHOOL KIMENGUMI

>Plot: middle school, then high school group of odd faced guys and two cute girls
>Sannen had 5 volumes, then ended and at the same time started High School
>All characters have puns in their names
>Coexited well with Dr.Slump

youtube.com/watch?v=GfhIU4g4Wyw

Damn, all three of these are absolutely massive. KINNIKUMAN anime remake when? Cobra has some recent anime adaptations, are they any good?

CAPTAIN TSUBASA

>The FOOTBALL manga
>Made a lot of current football players to play football
>Plot: Tsubasa growth while he plays football tournaments with his school team
>Players had special moves, influenced by Ring ni Kakero

youtube.com/watch?v=CImqTuRjWm4

CAT'S EYE
>By Tsukasa Hojo (City Hunter)
>Plot: Kisugi sisters, work in a cafe at day, steal stuff at night
>First Jump important manga (second counting gag Dr.Slump) which main characters were girls/women

youtube.com/watch?v=I34uOs0aaZI

STOP, HIBARI-KUN!

>First Jump important romance manga
>Still, it was made as parody of romance manga boom
>Plot: MC gets in love with cute girl. Cute girl is daughter of yakuza. Cute girl is cute boy.

youtube.com/watch?v=GtP2XUvKT7g

FUMA NO KOJIRO

>By Kurumada (Ring ni Kakero, Saint Seiya)
>Plot: Adventures of Ninja Kojiro
>First fantasy action Jump manga in which sports aren't involved
>Ninku and Naruto are reminiscents of this manga

youtube.com/watch?v=FZtdOvt5Zd4

Hibari was so fucking hot.

Forgot to add volume 1 cover

I want to fuck that yakuza daughter (male).

Wait so left is boy and right is girl?

YOROSHIKU MECHADOC

>Second Jump cars manga after Circuit no Okami
>Plot: Jun Kazami, car mechanic who races with them after tuning
>While Circuit no Okami was about branded cars like Porsche, Ferrari, etc, in Yoroshiku Mechadoc you used your own everyday car, tuned it, then raced
>Most important influence to Initial D

youtube.com/watch?v=1UrCoUgf6BM

>Cute girl is daughter of yakuza. Cute girl is cute boy.
Well that sounds fun

I get sad knowing probably almost none of these have translations.

So drawing a girl (male) was big in the 80s too

WINGMAN

>By Masakazu Katsura (remember his name well; he did later Video Game Ai, DNA2, and I's)
>Plot: Kenta Hirano, a superhero fanboy. He meets princess of another world who gives him the power to become Wingman to help her battle a dictator of her universe. Then, a clasmate of Kenta appears and we get a love triangle.
>First Jump important romance manga (second if we count romance parody Hibari-kun) with love triangle

youtube.com/watch?v=jTI9EZglHX4

Hibari’s completely scanlated, so there’s some consolation.

>Kamen Rider/Sentai fan becomes an actual toku hero and gets a love triangle with two cute girls
Like that premise.

Miku best girl, Aoi a shit.

It has 4 volumes so that explains it.

And that's all for now. Honorable mentions to Tennis Boy, more Motomiya shonen, Black Angels (very dark manga from Doberman Deka drawer who didn't like how light Doberman Deka became, is about an assassin who kills evil people), and Shape Up Ran (by author of Tar-chan, first Jump gag manga which had some serious moments)

Hokuto no Ken is for next thread, but for the moment we got pretty heavy hits there to discuss

Thanks for this thread OP, now I'll understand why some manga had so many characters on Jump Ultimate Stars.

Keep making these if you can, having actual useful contributions come from Sup Forums is nice every once in a while.

It's time for power!

Jump lineup of this period:
>Cobra
>Cat's Eye
>Fuma no Kojiro (the two years it lasted)
>Motomiya shonen
>Black Angels
>Stop Hibari-kun!/Wingman
>Ring ni Kakero/Captain Tsubasa
>Yoroshiku Mechadoc
>Kinnikuman
>Kochikame
>Dr.Slump
>Highschool Kimengumi
>Shape Up Ran

I asked before, are the new Cobra anime adaptations any good? I probably shouldn't bother since no one seems to have watched them.

OP here. Unlike two previous threads, these titles are already known by us, so I want to remark the most unknown title, which is a very good manga:

when I first saw that, I took note of the art style as I had a gut feeling that I would be seeing it (or similar) in the decade to come, I am glad of that as it turns out many years later.

And the reason why making football(soccer) manga in Jump is a basicallu a suicide

Also, want to remark Ring ni Kakero again. That manga made possible Captain Tsubasa. Made possible Hokuto no Ken. Made possible Dragon Ball.

Ring ni Kakero deserves the special spot in Jump it has

Noticing how there is a little decline of sports manga (still, Captain Tsubasa and Muscleman are monopolizing, and we have Yoroshiku Mechadoc) while there is an important increase of gag manga. This is the age of gag manga.

First romances are also appearing, while action manga remains the same in quantity

1968-73 had 8 important titles
1973-78 had only 6 (7 if we move Hadashi no Gen there; should have put it in that period)
1978-83 has 10 titles (it could have been 9 since Fuma no Kojiro should have been more like an honorable mention, but whatever)

Decent enough. The ops were really good

I've heard Yudetamago and Buronson were rivals

Oh was Naruto stated be influenced by Fuma no Kojiro? When I watched it I noticed some similarities but I assumed it was a coincidence.

I really need to start this.

Either the comedy side or the "power of guts" side of Kinnikuman are a bit too old fashioned for the modern world. Nisei was the best you could get.

Katsura is a close friend of Toriyama, they even did a couple of manga together, unfortunately both manga fall into the "he looks weak but is actually very strong" category wich Toriyama is known for.

Wasn't Katsura's original plans for Zetman to be a sequel/reboot of Wingman? It's been a while since I read the original outline.

That's an amazing lineup

>From last thread.

>Ashita no Joe's artist brother;Akio Chiba committed suicide while in the middle of a serialization for Monthly Shonen Jump a few years after Play Ball was over

>Ashita no Joe's author/writer died, then ten years later his daughter was murdered.

Fucking haunted.

>First Jump manga to continue after having ended
What does this mean? that it changed magazines or that it got extra chapters on the volumes?

Why tho?

Basically, in 2014 the original authors returned to continue the series.

Because tsubasa can't be topped

Honestly the best sports series there is

i love kinnikuman. the comedy holds up and whenever pro wrestling gets hot in japan you see references to it.

warsman has such a great design.

No one on Jump had continued their series until 2014? i find that hard to believe but i'll take it.

Shameless School ended and contiuned again like twice as the same title but maybe OP meant something else.

Whens goku tho-

Dbfag spotted

I like that opening.

If I were to say I’d translate any old Jump manga (not limited to any of the ones OP listed over the last few days), which one would you guys prefer?

Yoroshiku Mechadoc was based

You could say first romance in Jump happened in Cat's Eye (police of that manga was in love with middle sister)

Still, Hiroshi was in love with Kyoko in Gokonjo Gaeru and there was romance in that manga.

And Banba (Samurai Giants) was in love with a girl and wanted to show her his baseball to make her get in love with him

Otoko Ippiki Gaki-Daisho. All 20 volumes are available in internet, and I think some of us would like to get scanlation of the father of delinquent manga and the first big Jump hit

I second this. I'd also like to see Astro Kyudan and Doberman Deka

inazumen eleven is a literal 10/10

I'd also like Circuit no Okami and Ring ni Kakero (despite having the anime which starts at manga chapter 33)

Best stuff would be firstly Otoko, then Astro Kyudan and Ring ni Kakero

Yeah although Ring is currently being translated by happy scans, unless they stopped.

Dokonjo Gaeru and Otoko Ippiki, in that order.

I'd love Shonen Isamu and Samurai Giants (Bamba was the GOAT)

I support Otoko to be prioritized. Otoko was way too important and deserves to be scanlated

It seems they didn't stop (last chapter they did was 26 last december). Still, they are so slow

Im considering doing it on my own as I have the full manga in Spanish and can use Google translate to convert it for my own reading. The only problem is scanlators look down on you if you use Google translate so if I go through with it it'll be just for me unless anyone else wants it

The entire 24 volumes in spanish? That's cool. Only spanish scanlation I found was until volume 8-9

The entire 25 volumes, I was one number down

Coming back to 78-83 theme: who knew about Cat's Eye and High School Kimengumi?

Like a handful of other 80s series, Cat's Eye was ridiculously popular in parts of Europe. Mainly Finland and France.

I only know about Cat's Eye because the anime's theme song is so damn iconic in Japan.

My point of view from Spain

68-73: Mazinger Z is very well know here. One big franchise with a lot of fans here. Rest of titles are completely unknown: nobody here knows about Otoko, Astro Kyudan, Isamu, Samurai Giants, etc. Seems Dokonjo Gaeru anime was dubbed in Spain in 80s, still nobody remembers it/knows it currently
73-78: Kochikame is very well known here. Ring ni Kakero is known as ''the other work of Saint Seiya author''. Rest of titles are unknown.
78-83: Things change here. Everybody knows Dr.Slump, Muscleman and Captain Tsubasa, some people also know Cobra and Hibari-kun. Wingman, Mechadoc, Cat's Eye and Kimengumi are little known or not known at all

Italy, too.

The proportion doesn't look took bad in his image, how did Takahashi's art evolve to such ridiculous meme status?

Love Kimengumi opening

It's an intentional style.
Dynamism in still pictures and what have you.

I knew about Cat's eye. Funny how so far all of these came out like 20 years before I was born.

First big Jump success in Spain

youtube.com/watch?v=kCMfDbTOhQs

I saw it dubbed, and as with other TMS series, names were semi changed.

Who won the Kentabowl?

In Spain, everyone and its mother knows about Mazinger Z, Captain Tsubasa, Saint Seiya and Dragon Ball, but Captain Tsubasa in particular reached ridiculous levels of influence.

Pic related, Andrés Iniesta, who won everything playing for Barcelona, scored the goal that gave Spain its only World Cup, and dedicated it to his recently deceased childhood friend. This guy just lived the sports shounen manga life.

I could help you, I know spanish

cool

Well, in fact first Jump show which became iconic in Spain was Mazinger Z youtube.com/watch?v=TG2N-SwTChw

Bump

So little discussion here compared to other two threads

Who did watch Cobra, Dr Slump or Kinnikuman? Did you enjoy it?

Maybe meant oldest Jump title to end and then continue, rather than "first"?

>Finland
Wait, what? Since when?

The magnus opus of Toriyama and the first gag I read, totally amazing.

That may be it, makes more sense

...

i guess

I should read Wingman.

Also, noticing how suddenly in beginning of 80s manga art changed. Samurai Giants, Doberman Deka, Circuit Okami, even Ring ni Kakero had some similar art, then we jumped to Hibari-kun, Captain Tsubasa, Kimengumi, and Wingman art

I think he meant this by ridiculous meme status

Yes, he's doing that intentionally. He's not liteally blind.

I dont believe that, he must be blind
whats with the tiny heads, whats with the everything
