FMP if you want something immediately good. The first season of Fafner is a slog, even if everything after is amazing. The continuity is just too strong that you can't skip the worst part of it.

Anyone who's seen Ideon and MSG should be able to tell that Evangelion is literally a straight play on a Tomino show. It's constructed in the same way and the MC's progression is on the same track as many of Tomino's young lad turned warrior characters: neurotic, disenfranchised with society, struggling to accept other people and dealing with alienation, having unfair responsibilities thrust on them and raging against it while also begrudgingly accepting them and even forming an identity around it. Like the entire narrative is a Tomino show. I can see how some of the ideas are from Devilman and Mazinger but seriously it's pretty much a Tomino show.

Also, instrumentality? Probably the Ide. The Ide was the psychic collective of a dead race that lost their bodies and became one, with the Ideon being an outlet for its will and power.

I think most of them haven't seen any Tomino shows or are entry level viewers who don't realize that there are actually things happening in Gundam beyond a failed (at the time of production) toy commercial. Eva is more explicit with themes and characterization, and better paced with less filler. Seriously, Gundam didn't need to be like 43 episodes

you clearly havent talked to a lot of them, see the third post in this thread. evafags will call anything an eva ripoff, no matter the themes, visuals or characterization. if its lead is a male teenager who happens to pilot mech then its eva. doesnt matter that eva got most of its ideas from other shows. the same already happens with franxx, a show that bears arguably no similarities to eva whatsoever but is clearly way more inspired by klk, fafner and a bunch of other entries. not even gonnna start on the fact that most eva fags probably havent even seen a single mecha show that isnt either eva or ttgl.

The movies are absolutely nothing like the TV.
They're just garbage "Hey, we have tons of money and need to blow them on the animation, no need to hire a writer or anything."
Meanwhile, the show is a great looking comedy show which is basically Japanese Police Academy with a super likable cast and so on.

tv is quite literally police academy as a cartoon. movies and ovas are way better if you ask me. the ovas manage to transport part of the comedy while also being serious if necessary. tv show is just bleh to be honest.

the funny thing is that this isnt even corrent. the first 24 episodes arent bad by any means, they are just slow, which happens to be something a lot of modern viewers cant deal with. the only things that really are bad a bunch of the animated sequences and the hirai face which, for some reason, is really fucking obnoxious in dead aggressor moreso than in any of the other works he has worked on.

Eva has the flavourings and similar setup of Tomino shows, along with some similarities to Devilman/Ideon but they stop on a superficial level. Eva’s direction, focus and execution are so different it confuses me when fans of the mentioned series get haughty about it like it completely changes things. Anno is a tominofag for sure but you niggers jump the gun on another level. Nobody is being ignorant just because they like Eva without seeing series that only having on anything to do with it on a superficial level.

Absolutely agree. I don't have anything against full comedy but the writing and the pacing were mediocre.
The OVA is way funnier and you won't fall asleep while watching it.

I was talking in general there, not just for Eva. To clarify, I meant that the concept of a ripoff exists for a reason, but people like to abuse that to shit on [show they don’t like]. I personally haven’t come across a fullblown ripoff of Eva, though I would be interested in seeing one. Closest thing was RahXephon but that went in a different direction.

Because a ripoff is a vague term in itself. As far as the people causing drama about it, it would have to be a fullblown ripoff. RahXephon had similar structure, tone and beats as Eva but went in a different direction. That being the closest was to emphasise that I really haven’t come across anything that can be considered a ripoff of Eva. And you’ve pretty much turned this into a pointless argument of semantics for some reason, but my point still stands.
