I was going to post some nostalgic tracks (from SS, Rayearth, Macross, Shurato and Groizer X) but that other thread died before I could. And most of the tracks were from SS. I agree with you, the best tracks from that time were really something else.
Studios should improve in that area, good soundtracks can (imho) greatly help an anime become more memorable.

Sometimes, even a good score won't make up for a poor/dated arrangement so this is a very important aspect, and SS nails it.
I think this is due to the fact most of the OST is orchestral in nature, and that will always sound good. Some old series had good tunes but feel dated being a product of their times. Think like the Gundam OST, that has a lot of variation and good tunes but relies too much on synthesizers and a kind of "disco" tempo which makes it a bit too groovy for today's standards. Another one I can think that aged well was Votoms, due to the "jazzy" atmosphere.

It's mostly because the main saint seiya craze around here was with the airing of the original anime series. When we got Hades where Dohko and shion are relevant the public was much smaller, basically just old fans.

- G Saga: spin-off prequel that started good but then it wore itself out.
