Why are digital manga releases usually such trash? Pic related, top is the original monthly release on the Alphapolis website and bottom is taken from the digital release of the volume on Ebook Japan. It's a hell of a quality difference, is there a reason the original release didn't look like the bottom one?

The bottom one is superior.
Yeah, that's the point. They're both digital releases, so why is there a superior one?
You're asking why magazine raws are worse than tankobon raws?
I hope not, because you'd be retarded if you did.
Because they want you to pay money for their manga.
Imagine their FREE releases having superior quality.
Why would anyone bother buying the tank?
No, both of these are from digital releases.
If the first one is released free on the website, it's to get people to pay for the higher quality one. Isn't the website example upscaled from what they use?
The upper raw one uses lower quality bits
Is this a joke? Top one has crushed black levels. That is not a good thing. It means you will LOSE detail in any remotely dark scenes.

Can't be arsed to get a screenshot because the website is a pain, but the latest chapter is definitely much nicer quality than the OP.
I know the bottom one is better, it's pretty apparent even after I downsized it. I thought it was pretty obvious from the OP.
The size of images on that site is 500x711, the black levels may be from whoever added the translation to the page.
>500x711
Fucking why.
They are ant size and riddled with artifacts. Shit.
They're not ant sized, riddled with artifacts and filled with crushed blacks though.
To sell higher quality versions. That's also why they make getting the url for the image itself slightly more difficult.
Isn't the norm something like 1000/1200px high? That's got to be the worst looking raws I've ever seen, even for a weekly release.
It depends on publisher/magazine. See pic related. I don't know why Kadokawa does it.
At least not all free online do it to that degree.
But all of them have one thing in common, they obviously save it at some lower quality JPEG setting so people buy their shit.
Pic related's resolution is good but the quality overall is still bad because of mentioned reason.
I think the norm for Alphapolis is 500x711, and some scanlations of those chapters could be upscaled.

KADOKAWA a shit.
They're giving you x2048 for some manga and it's so clearly an upscale that it even hurts to look at.
Christ, that's awful.
My nigga.
You'd think they'd have much higher files lying around to work with, because physical releases tend to look much better.
