Does Sup Forums like horror?

The only scary horror anime is perfect blue. Akira is a good movie but not a good horror. The rest aren’t scary either.

>akira is a good movie
I wish I could have standards this low

I like anything that's actually good. Horror is such a stupid genre though. Anime isn't a good mix for it.

I’m not a fan no, I get scared to easily and I don’t find most of any horror plots interesting

Why is it bad user. Looks beautiful, makes you feel like your having a nightmare, great characters, and a gainax ending. Everything a good anime needs

I'm a fan, but not of a fair amount of those. Parastye is too shounen-ey technical, Blood Last Vampire / Demon City / Corpse Party is dumb fun, When They Cry is forced simplistic and convoluted at the same time, Wicked City lacks focus and forces romance, Hell Girl is atrocious

>Shiki
>Monster
>Perfect Blue
>Junji Ito (meh)
These I'm behind, a few others likely good

I fear to even ask what you consider "good"

Ghost Hound and Bio Hunter are good

BTW if you like manga, Harem End is pretty creepy

>why is it bad
Dunno.

Akira not being considered good isn't some odd opinion user. Plenty of people having seen more mature artistic movies agree with me. To be fair I didn't finish Akira. So my opinion is only valid for the first hour or so that I did watch

Akira is kindof too crazy and doesn't really accomplish much. It's great action, but it takes an odd type of patience to sit through and be invested in it all. It's not a bad movie, but I wouldn't say it's overall a masterpiece - while definitely in animation

The first hour of Akira is pretty alright, but it falls apart in the only way a husk of a story can.
The animation is great but everything else is terrible.
Ideon Be invoked is something I'd consider good. Hell, it's better than good.

>and a gainax ending
What does this mean? Also it was done by TMS which is the GOAT studio.

Ayakashi is honestly awful.
The first four episodes (prelude to mononoke) is great but lemon samurai and the story about the haunted castle are just fucking dry beyond belief.
I mean fuck I'm a bit shocked that up here instead of something like Aoi Bungaku or even mononoke proper.

I just can't believe Another is the best horror anime ever made.

I just can't believe someone can have this much of a shit taste.

Shiki is probably the only horror anime that actually got to me at times. A lot of shows don't get how to do the buildup or how to get the atmosphere right

Anime isn't very good at horror. It becomes comedy far too easily.
Some of Yami Shibai is decent. The sound and art set up a creepy atmosphere well. They're only 3 minute spooky stories though.

Shiki was legit scary until they started showing things from the vampires POV

Ghost Hunt was fun to watch. If horror could be comfy, it'd be Ghost Hunt.

Yeah, but that wasn't a bad thing. Just made the story and character dilemmas more interesting. I don't think it ever actually scared me, but there were times I was 100% uneasy and had that jumpy vibe.

Literally the only scary part of Shiki was that part with pink hoe under the bed, and that's probably because my mom used to tell me the boogeyman was under my bed.

Higurashi was creepy for like the first 4 episodes, then it really loses the spooky factor afterwards.

Akira isn't horror and the movie is pretty garbage compared to the manga anyway.

Yeah but as a style more than because of the plots, which could never terrify me. I love the genre because it's creative as hell and I really dig the prose even if it's just a translation, the figures that are often used in horror really resonate within me.

>no Maruo
>shitting on Ito

Such a good OP for such a meh anime. I always thought the detective was kinda wonky at the start, and the lowkey moments were too autistic for my tastes. Even for offkilter creepy manga, the moments were too dry and lasted too long, also some really forced foreshadowing. I think the intro and episode 4 was the creepy part.

Gainax ending is a ending that makes not sense. (Evangelion, psg, etc)

*that is completely out of nowhere/unexpected

Eva's ending makes perfect sense. Both the series ending and EoE's ending.

Parasyte is very good but not scary. It's better as a moral dialogue than as a horror.

Yamishibai is god tier and I hope they keep making more seasons. Also Sentai needs to put out seasons 3-5.

True that

No it doesn't. Tards choose to delude themselves into thinking it does because they're too psychologically immature to admit their precious fucking anime is flawed.

Eva is flawed. But that doesn't mean it doesn't make sense. Just like anything else I'm sure there are places where the plot doesn't follow strict logic but the endings are directly connected to stuff talked about in the series.

>I wish I could have standards this low
I always wonder what people like you consider to be good.

The problem with a lot of Japanese horror, both as anime and in film, television, is that it's really overacted. The only good horror anime is somber stuff like Shiki, Mononoke and Perfect Blue.

>Mononoke
Can this even be considered horror? It's more like psychological surrealism. Nothing really horrifying actually happens in it. I found it to be quite dull and I wasn't fond of it all being 2-3 parters.

The Wayward Cloud (2005) is pure unadulterated kino

Personally I think the way it was paced makes it part of the horror genre. Quite a lot of the reveals where explicitly horrific, and they way they were built up was really well done. I'm thinking about the boot arc in particular.

Its literally impossible to create a good(i.e scary) anime horror. Even harder when it isn't a movie but a series. Prove me wrong

Everything is possible in theory. There. Proven you wrong.

I want examples of things already created.

I've already proven you wrong.

i accept your concession

What YOU think is scary is different than what others consider scary. You can't say something is not scary because you're only looking at it from your perspective and you don't have a good idea how other people view things from a psychological level. That's basically why it's subjective. I don't think anything is scary but that doesn't keep me from thinking there aren't good horror anime. Shows like Monster and Yamishibai are good examples.

What are some good atmospheric animu? I know Corpse party is just edgy torture porn but I thought the spook school was a great setting. Is there something that oozes spookiness?

You have to remember that Japanese horror is different from Western horror. It's very much about ghosts, spirits, and superstition. Most of the time it's about how these supernatural elements affect the psych of characters. By Western standards some of these could be classified as psychological thrillers

sauce on these?

Horror is underrated. I'd take it over mecha, romcoms, or any other trash genre.

>implying western horror doesn't have that shit covered

I'll never forget that one fucking scene from Occultic;nine with the pale-boy in the basement. That was pretty much the moment when I actually believed that a horror anime could be possible. It's just that nobody puts enough effort into it.

>posting modern horror
That shit was fucking garbage.

Can you make more of these? I'd like one with Belladonna if you please.

>anime horror fans are massive fucking plebs
Color me shocked.

>I'm a minor!
The best horror usually has sci-fi elements, time to give this a rewatch.

You could have easily chosen dozens of great movies yet you settled on flavor of the month borefest.

The only anime that ever spooked me were a couple of scenes in Shiki and Ghost Hound. Also the first season of Yami Shibai was good as well as Kowabon, but they're all really short.
Overall manga is much, much better for horror. The scariest ones I've read were The Ring and some of the Higurashi chapters. Fuan no Tane was a bit disappointing, and Ito's stuff is mostly just good for the creative and funny stories.

>Ghost Hound
What's this about? I've always been curious but I HATE Production I.G ever since they ruined Cyborg 009. Is it a good spookshow?
>Kowabon
Well this is new. Adding it to my list right now. Why do shows like this, Horror News, and Kagewani usually get low sores? I think they do their job well.

Kowabon is just a series of 2-minute shorts that are mostly rotoscoped. It's been a few years since I watched it but I remember finding it pretty unnerving. Horror anime should try rotoscoping more, it really helps blurring the line between what looks real and what looks animated.
Ghost Hound is actually a good series apart from the meh last ep. Give it a go especially if you're interested in psychology, because they sort of mix spiritual/supernatural experiences with psych stuff in the story.

The Witch is unironically the best period piece I've seen this decade, it also just so happens to be a horror film. I guess I shouldn't be shocked to find that this board has such shit taste, but it still makes me a little sad, honestly.

>Horror anime should try rotoscoping more
I thought Flowers of Evil had an interesting and refreshing look to it. A lot of people were bitching about it because it didn't look like the manga but honestly it would have looked like another generic cookie cutter anime if they had gone that route.

The only good horror anime are Perfect Blue and Magnetic Rose.

The splatterhouse style most "horror" anime adopt (see Genocyber and Wicked City) isn't true horror. True horror is about atmosphere and subtlety. Outside of the two I mentioned, some of the best horror in the industry comes from series that have horror episodes/segments, but aren't actually dedicated horror anime. Examples would be Oniisama e, Lain or that one episode from Yamato 2199.

it doesnt have any ninjas or super heroes
it's boring shit

It's only you who has shit taste because no one here likes what you like. You know it's true because even fucking Sup Forums likes The VVitch and they are the kind of people who praise slasher films every chance they get.

>Magnetic Rose
Not really horror but close
>Oniisama e
haven't seen but do explain. I always thought it was some kind of drama/slice of life
>Lain
nah and fuck that show
>Yamato 2199
Only watched the original.

The third chapter of the VN is absolutely terrifying, but it got completely butchered in the anime

If we're talking show quality I think Dusk Maiden of Amnesia should be included too. It's a romance horror with what I thought was incredibly beautiful coloring and screen composition. Lot of good sequences of tension build up followed by moments of levity. Addicting OP and ED too.
Its not always scary, but there are quite a few times where you'll get got good.

You sound like the hipster guy who didn't even see that movie and just hate it because mainstream.

What are you smoking?

>I think Dusk Maiden of Amnesia should be included too
OP here. I wanted to add it because it's actually one of my favorite romances. I do think the comedy and romance aspects of it outweigh any horror elements. There are some dark shit in there but not enough to be included with the rest. Hell I even purchased the Sentai blu ray which comes with the OST as a bonus. No I didn't pay full price. It was only like $25 during a rightstuf Sentai sale. Anyway great show. Cozy as fuck.

>The Wayward Cloud (2005)
>Sup Forums

>stop not liking what I like
Go to bed, samefag.

>Magnetic Rose
>not horror
I'd love to see you try to explain this one.
>Oniisama e
It is a SoL drama, but the fact that 95% of the cast are mentally ill leads to some really creepy moments happening. It also uses a lot of tropes you would see in classic gothic horror, including the setting being a gothic school with dark shadows everywhere, incest, and a kind of "monster-in-the-attic" character (Rei).
>Lain
The behaviour of Lain's sister late in the series is some textbook creepy horror. The ominous humming of the wires throughout the series and some of the hallucinations Lain has is also quite eerie. Again, it's not dedicated horror, but it has elements of that genre.
>Yamato 2199
I'm referring to the episode involving the witch. The way she plays mind games with the crew by exploiting their own fears and insecurities is solid psychological horror.

What I'm basically trying to say is that good horror is more about being disturbing and uncanny, rather than being scary or gory. This is what most anime don't seem to get.

this

Why do Japs have to be fucking faggots. I'd kill for more Halloween specials but they hate fun holidays. The best we get is a couple of Jack O'lanterns in the Bebop movie and a fucking haunted house during a Cultural festival in shitty romcoms.

>why don't Japanese people celebrate a holiday they have 0 attachment to
Nigga, you high?

It's a holiday for kids to dress up and eat sweets. It's nothing to do with horror. This is why many little girl shows feature it.
Also you're a faggot.

>It's a holiday for kids to dress up and eat sweets
Do more research, retard.

That's literally Japanese Haloween though. Well that and a pumpkin theme.
Do you also wonder why Christmas episodes feature dating and cakes rather than midnight mass?

Yamishibai is best horror

>Me want more Halloween, me a fucking idiot

Too bad the 3rd season was utter shit.

It's also some of the worst.
S4 was worse.

What kind of argument is this to a guy who was simply saying that's not what Halloween is.
First two seasons were great then it got mediocre but I'll still watch them because it cozy and short. You could finish all 5 season in less time it would take you to watch half of a 12 episode series.

S4 was also pretty bad, I agree but personally I thought S3 was even worse. Doesn't mean much, though, since both suck. I'm glad S5 turned out much better.

S6 when?

This is the spookiest moment in anime.unless you're a brainlet and you're not invested in it

Lain is the epitome of a dull show. People who pretend to actually find enjoyment in it are pretentious beyond belief. It's aged like milk and the pacing is horrendous.

t.brainlet

Great argument. Glad the director is dead as fuck. Don't need more of his so deep philosophical anime.

To me horror and war are the weakest genres for animation. The biggest problem to me is that both require a sense of realism to cause an impact on the audience. Anime takes this by visually simplifying its world and characters.

Even if the stories are good or entertaining, anime horror hardly scares anyone.

Woah man, don't cut yourself with that edge.

I want to go back in time and play Corpse Party

Most of these are action or thriller, not horror.
