I wouldn't really call any show that gets three seasons and a fuckin radio show "underrated"
it's just one of those shows that was big for a while but doesn't have that certain thing that lets studios push/rehash it endlessly. It's more like haruhi and less like evangelion.

monogatari offers a lot of the same things that gave SZS mass appeal (weird dark humor and meta jokes/puns, lots of cute/sexy girls) while being a supernatural action/drama series instead of a weird political satire and doubling down on the cheesecake
