Maid Dragon is not KyoAni property and it was very far from flop. It was THE most popular anime in China and still is among the top. Since very big part from revenue comes from streaming you can imagine what 70 millions view on Bilibili did to it. Also sold merch in china like crazy and had own conventions - but money from that probably not goes to KyoAni.
Phantom World did good promoting its own LN, as it was timed with new vollume release of it. KyoAni are so persistent in adapting own material not because they are stubborn, but because they DO profit from it greatly.

Plus, Happy End in VEG is pretty much confirmed via timeskips in previous stories. So Violet still not learning what "love" is and parting with Gilbert again in end of novels is only a temporary thing meaning it will just take her few more years.
