I apologize for the blurriness in parts, I didn't notice till afterward and I didn't want to weigh down on the bindings too much. I could go in and take actual photos of parts that are too hard to read if necessary. As far as I know, nobody else has ever scanned this, and I couldn't find any translations of it anywhere.

Lain has visual and auditory hallucinations in both the game and the anime. In the game she goes to a psychiatrist for it. You can say it's either caused by her non-human nature.

It all starts as a prank.

If you're watching Lain in 2017 for entertainment, prepare to be disappointed. It's going to feel dated by today's standards, and it wasn't particularly action packed even back then, but it is an important piece of history. Most of it's wild predictions and themes became real and mundane, so what is left is dreamlike horror that doesn't quite have the impact it once had. You really would only watch it so you have more knowledge of anime history, like you would watch Charlie Chaplin (or the other great clowns) for comedy. Everything lain did was eventually done better by later series, or would just seem obvious to someone born after the early 90's.

It's earned it's respect and praise via accuracy, instead of by impact.

I know this ennui user, and let me tell you there's worse thoughts out there. We could be Boltzmann brains sitting in Plato's cave, or we could be simulations made to try and figure out the history of mankind. No other anime or piece of media in the last 20 years was as spookely correct in it's prediction of the future.

No other show can claim to be prophetic.

It still has an impact, it's just not a traditional story. Keep in mind that it wasn't written to predict the future of the internet, so it's not like all it had for value was looking forward about anything. Its themes are important to the present day and present time, remember.

I think the "prophetic" nature of Lain is majorly blown out of proportion simply because it used the internet, which turned out to be something very big for the world, in its plot. I think it's a really bold claim to say that literally no other media was predictive. It likely wasn't that difficult to imagine what would happen, and stuff like that was already happening anyway. When you use the net in your setting, you want to be realistic, so of course a team of people who care about creating something quality would go for that.

I strongly disagree with you. I watched it maybe 6 years ago and it immediately earned a place in my heart. It's still among my 10/10 animes and I would argue nothing did better the things Lian was aiming for. It's animation hasn't aged at all too. Perhaps it's too slow / has too little action for the never generations who grew up on shittily paced hollywoodblockbusters, but that's it.

The internet was extremely different back at release, and was barely beginning to change the world. There were predictions that Lain got wrong, like the GopherNet model's loss, the fall of BBS, and the use of cellphones verses the wired internet. But some of the predictions it did get right were out of nowhere, like the creation of Anonymous. It's those strange predictions panning out that gave Lain it's prophetic reputation.

Such low effort posting and shitty pasta should be bullied. The fact nobody has suggested they go to >>Sup Forums or called them faggots is a disgrace to Sup Forums's honor. Shame on everyone, do your part for Sup Forums.

By the way, does anybody know just how limited it was back in '99 when it was released? I'd be curious to know how rare it is. I was able to get it for under a hundred dollars whereas I had only ever seen it going for more than that.

It (the booklet) is part of the boxed 2CD ambient soundtrack. Unlike the guitar based one or the Cyberia Mix CD, this one has all the other background music like the one that plays during the conspiracy infodump. 57 total tracks, a Lain poster, some stickers, and a second CD with a Lain dress-up/shooting game + desktop clock, wallpapers, screensavers, desktop icons, sound effects from the anime, and video clips.

It's a gay term I admit but it's a very real phenomena.

I'm curious, how many times have you guys rewatched Lain? After finishing it I didn't feel anything. No relief or happiness, no sadness or despair, no confusion or understanding--it just ended and that was that. I usually don't watch an anime more than once but I'm thinking of making an exception for her. Is there anything I should look out for or watch/read up on before I start it up again.
