In most cases the MC isn't really universally loved, sociable, swarmed by girls, etc. - he starts out as a loser, just like the viewer and then he suddenly stumbles into girls who start to like him (this however doesn't happen because he actively seeks out girls (i.e. "mans up") but by mere chance, divine intervention, etc.
