Watch golden age movies 1-3 then skip to volume 14

Read manga 1-4, play Berserk Musuo, skip to volume 31.
OR
Read all the manga right after the movies.

Your choice, pleb. All these ways except for straightup reading the manga omit and/or change scenes. Watching the movies then reading the manga is the ultimate pleb experience if you are on the ropes about what to do.

Watch the original anime (1997). If it gets you interested, watch the Golden Age arc adaptation (3 movies, already covered by the anime) and/or read the manga (manga covers much more, has some changes, is still ongoing, art is bad both in the beginning and after author switched to digital). Don't watch the Berserk 2016/2017 adaptations - they're terrible.

They had plenty of time for animating, but they had no plan on how the anime is supposed to look. Most of the production happened a few months before release and they had problems with the models and editing programs, also they wasted a lot of time on adding those pencil lines from the manga(whatever this is called). The director was inexperienced too.

The recent movies (which cover the same ground as the original anime) are ok. As far as Japanese CG goes, its some of the best, but its still Japanese CG.

But avoid the tv series that followed at all costs. It's truly abysmal.
