Not gonna lie, I only recognize this series from OPTs where user's post the pic of the old man crying. I always thought he was the puppet girls father and he was having some sort of psychological break or something. What's he really crying about?

if it's the pic I'm thinking of it's the last panel of the manga and sumire's high school friends run into her a few years after graduation and she's at a different school and doesn't remember them but the old man puppeteer is crying because of all the fond memories

Wrong.

The Old Man is a total mystery until the end of the manga. You never learn why he's the way he is.

The picture you're thinking of comes from a scene where he reunites with his old friends after many years. The Sumire puppet is in-character as a 16 year old girl, and doesn't claim to remember their time together, but when they look at the Old Man he's crying tears of joy.

The way the girls were upset that Sumire didn't recognize them was sad, but seeing the old man crying really shoots you in the heart.
