No she just went full-Juvia-obsessive on the day his mentor/mother figure died horribly and was even more pushy than usual. It was just super bad timing. I was wicked pissed and said he was dead to me for weeks but upon a rewatch, it's not good that he makes her a crying ball of rejection but it's understandable, he sees what he's done and appreciates her for once, and then she springs back into usual Juvia-retarded mode. It has a happy ending. But yes he was a total motherfucker. She knit him a scarf (it's a random anniversary of their meeting that she has made into a holiday in her kooky head) and he ends up refusing to take it and it sits there abandoned in the snow. MY HEART.

Oh zip it, user. Fairy Tail is no masterpiece of cinema but it's fun, hype, and has a million interesting unique characters, charm aplenty, some real feels and is, did I mention, fun? It's the best guilty pleasure ever. To say nothing of the rarely-equaled fan service. It is what it is without shame and that's kinda special.

Shonen is by it's very nature utterly atrocious in every conceivable way. Series like Naruto, Bleach, and BnHA are so unbelievably bad that just knowing someone else likes them is enough to make me lose all respect for that person.
Fairy Tail is written almost as poorly as the popular Jump shonen, but it at least manages to have SOME value to it, regardless of how cheap, and that's more than I can say about any other popular shonen.

Every modern Jump shonen runs on the exact same conveyor belt formula of predictable character arcs that always start, progress, and end the exact same way.

First a character is introduced as a cool and capable badass. After a few episodes, it turns out this cool and capable badass actually has some baggage shown in a flashback from his childhood. "I'm not good at relying on others", "I don't believe in myself", "I've got problems with my parents" etc. The specific baggage they have differs from character to character but it's largely irrelevant to how the character arc goes.

Eventually this character will be put up against a wall, and the only way out is to mentally overcome the baggage that has been presented. There will be a big epic 'hype' action scene where the character explicitly narrates himself overcoming his problem, while various flashbacks are presented to remind the viewer that this is the part where character development happens. "I've never been able to get along with others. I thought I was better than them. But now I see it. I was wrong. I have to let go of the past and look to the future." It all climaxes with one big moment where the music stops, the character yells out his special attack "CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT PUUUUUUUUUUNCH!!!". The silence stays for a few moments, followed by the crowd cheering or whatever big noise is applicable in the context. Bring the next character off the conveyor belt, rinse and repeat over the next episode or two.

Naruto, Kuroko, BnHA, Haikyuu, Soma, and basically every other battle or sports show that started publishing in Jump post-2000 follows this exact formula to a T with no variation whatsoever. If you've seen a single character arc in any of these shows, you've basically seen the entirety of all of them. It's creatively bankrupt, and it's as if you could use computer software to generate these arcs just by filling in the blanks, clicking "Generate Arc", and watching it roll off the belt.

There's a lot more than makes shonen terrible, particularly the "tell, don't show" approach to action scenes, but it's not like anybody is going to read any more multi paragraph posts so I'll just stop there.

I can understand how the formula resonates well with people...at least the first couple times you see it, but after a few times it just feels like I'm watching the same shit reskinned. A show about highschool kids playing basketball and a show about super heroes should feel pretty different, but whether I'm watching Kuroko or BnHA, it just feels like the exact same show with a new coat of paint. Like they've discovered this formula that resonates well with a certain group of people, and have decided to just run it into the ground with no desire to ever challenge themselves or tell even a single character's story in a way that isn't completely by the book.

Most shonen have terrible writing, but fairy tail takes the cake. The series practically eviscerates itself every arc because the writer mistakes bullshit for "twists".
You think shit like DBZ super retconning how shingen earings working was incredibly bad? How about taking entire arcs and retconning them via simple and irrational misunderstandings every fucking time so that one could literally skip to the very fucking end of the series and not miss a thing.

Naruto and Bleach have decent settings but suffer strongly in lacking interesting, well written plot lines and bad character development.

Fairy Tail doesn't have much of a setting to begin with and what is there is pretty damn boring. Its plot points are worse than the others but this can be masked because unlike the others which come out as terrible because one can see what they could have been, Fairy Tail is an abyss of fleeting arcs that ultimately matter so little you can't really see any much of any potential in the series.
