Excel Saga

What does Sup Forums think of this oldie? How does it hold up in comparison to new shows like Pop Team Epic?

I loved it back when it came out. Not sure it would hold up for modern audiences given how dated the references in the show are.

It's a miracle of the universe. Many thanks to whichever user finally dumped all the scans of the English release.

That user is my god.

Amen. Man, this series was great. Was it only the early to mid 2000s that spawned this sort of irreverent wackiness?

...

I really wouldn't compare it to PTE given how Excel Saga is generally far more coherent and based in a consistent character cast despite its non-sequiturs and whacky swerves in episodic plot direction. I'd say it still hold up fine today despite it, as the other user mentioned, being somewhat dated. To that effect, it's a brilliant anime comedy time capsule and should really be treasured as such. And never forget to HAIL LORD ILPALAZZO.

HAIL LORD IL PALAZZO!

In all seriousness, though, this is spot on. It's not comparable to PTE at all. Sometimes I wonder if people don't remember the days when wacky, non-sequitur-based comedy and constant slapstick was an actual genre.

Watched when it aired on tv, I remember laugthing a lot but some episodes are hit or miss. Kinda afraid to rewatch and don't like as much as I remember

From memory, the super sentai episode was the best

Too offensive for nu-fans.

i need full manga

Madokami.

Thread has shockingly little Nabeshin.

Started watching it for the first time after a friend recommended it. It's great but can't be shotguned, you need to pace it because it's so crazy. I would say that it will ultimately hold out better because the humor is not as referential as pop team epic, but rather makes fun of basic tropes of the genre is just absurdism.

I know what you mean. It's more or less a deconstruction of anime tropes and stereotypes as an anime series. Each episode takes the piss out of a genre. Sports anime, high school anime, gangster anime, space opera, war anime, foreign animation, hentai etc.

This. The entire series (anime or manga) is just pure absurdist comedy. It's dated, but it'll still be funny in 5 years or 15.

It's on Nyaa

Thank you kind anons
I am not that guy but i was following this for over 10 years now after almost another 10 years I can finally have closure and die in peace

It was pretty meh, but PTE is so much much worse than Excel Saga ever was.

My nigger.

I still fap to her to this day

...

It is to this day one of my favorite anime series

I didn't like it back then but I don't like PTE too so I don't know.

It was really good back in the day, I thought it was funny. Shows like PTE don't really make their own jokes though, just endless pop culture references for le funny redditor millennials. Or maybe I'm just too old now to find that shit funny, who knows.

...

Watched it recently for the first time, the first half is great but it feels like they're scraping the bottom of the barrel without too much success for the second one. Last episode was fucking great though.

Everything related to Pedro was great, but otherwise it wasn't that good. The average level of comedy isn't that high and the visuals are really outdated. If the pacing was better and it had some really good original stuff (other than Pedro), it would have been more memorable for me.

While I like PTE a lot, I don't like the double-footage format (simply because having different seiyuu doesn't add enough extra to make it worth it) and the Bobunemimimmi parts (intentionally bad animation and having their own take on bkub material which usually is plain boring).
Having spent tons of time on eleven culture (varying from anime and games to 3DPD variety shows and Niconico deepweb), the references aren't a problem. In fact, recoginizing them instantly allows you to focus more on the execution of the whole thing, and that's one area where PTE really shines.

bkub is a master of surreal humor, he would do well even without the references. For normalfags shows like Gintama and PTE are hard to get in because they can't tell what is a joke, what is a joke built on reference, and what is just a quick reference with no real depth, so it isn't surprising that everyone gives up and complains about them being too random.

Jesus Christ.

Disgusting used goods.

I honestly didn't think that the anime was that good. It was too stupid for me. The manga on the other hand is great. It strikes a great balance between comedy, cute girls bumming around, and story.

What you should be comparing to PTE is Pani Poni Dash.

...

It's by no means a masterpiece, but it's by far the best in its genre.

post more god-tier Excel Saga stupidity

The anime made me read the manga. The anime's just embarassing for me.
