They are the canon couple/fated lovers of Evangelion. They literally get together in every iteration of Evangelion.

NGE makes the romantic relationship apparent from Asuka's first episode - Shinji peeks at Asuka while changing (he would never do that to Rei), the flirting about being inappropriate, Asuka's hands on top of Shinji's, and their sync ratio. The entire series is intertwined with the webbing of their relationship - Shinji's admiration for Asuka's reason to pilot Eva, Asuka's jealousy when being replaced by Rei, Shinji selfless act of bravery to Asuka, the Kiss, Asuka's waiting for Shinji at the hospital, or the mind-rape scenes.

Compare that to the other characters in the show. Looking for a relationship there is someone who can't see the forest from the trees. Rei is motherly/platonic love. Misato is a substitute mother (who has her own problems and is rejected purposely by Shinji). Hikari belongs to Toji. Kaworu is an angel who can't understand humans. There might be an occasional snippet of the relationship between other actors, but you have to basically ignore the entire series to do so.

So why do they work? Its simple. The harsher the tsun, the sweeter the dere. And when Asuka goes sweet on Shinji, he can't resist.

I don't think that's why Shinji is attracted to Asuka. The reasons for that are trauma-related. However, her exceptionally harsh tsun (and equally sweet dere) is why she appeals to viewers, at least for the most part.

If you think Asuka and Shinji are cute together, I think its time to start watching more anime. Watch anime that actually is an unsinkable ship, one that actually love each other. Asuka and Shinji are toxic for each other.

I guess that was directed as to why people liked them so much. The character's motivations are harder for me to understand.

Asuka is simple: you now have a cute boy who is literally the only other person in the world who can understand what its like to pilot Eva. His past is VERY similar yours. He appears to be considerate, kind, and domesticated. So from her perspective it makes sense. I feel like Asuka's feelings for Shinji become incredibly romantic after he jumps into the volcano to save her, which is understandable.

Shinji is harder. Rei, unbeknownst to him, is also an Eva pilot. She appears to be attractive. Their interactions are so muted, however, I think it kills any romantic interest they have. Or maybe Shinji just has a thing for fiesty redheads.

That is literally the point; after going through the crucible of Instrumentality, Shinji is a new man. Everyone is. It's a Fisher King thing, since Shinji's world is so connected to the whole world via being the Godhead.

Think about it: Shinji's instrumentality focuses heavily on his feelings for Asuka. And he can remain in the tang, but it wouldn't be real, and he knows this. So he kills instrumentality just like he killed Kaworu. Next scene is Shinji and Asuka on the beach.

You missed the point of the experience. He was supposed to experience romantic love and lose it to feel as Misato did. All the love interests in Evangelion end up cut by the same mold: mysterious, ambiguous figures that are almost always smiling and relaxed and have some larger than life view. Yui to Gendo, Kaji to Misato, Kaworu to Shinji.

I personally like Kawaguchi. It's different but still pleasant to look at. Ghibli shit going on.

I think that love takes several forms. You can have platonic love. The type of love that Gilgamesh and Enkidu have. Paternal love. Fraternal love. Maternal love. I agree that Kaworu showed Shinji love, I just don't think it was romantic in nature.

Everyone bringing up NGE 2 the other thread and nobody talked how the game made obvious that Shinji and Kaworu fell in love at first sight? There is platonic/friendship affection and a romantic one value in the game, if you don't tweak it with a cheat code and let it run as the story, Shinji has high romantic compatibility with Kaworu and low friendship with him, the opposite of his compatibility with Rei (high friendship, low romance), Asuka's kind of middle ground.
