What's the deal with Poputepipikku?

Scientifically speaking, what even is this? I mean, it is obviously a comedy/gag anime but I mean what IS this? Is it a meaningless gag anime like Nichijou, or perhaps a comedically structured criticism of the anime industry like Saiki Kusuo no Psi-nan?

At this point, I am leaning on the latter, but unlike Saiki, Poputepipikku is just too abstract. I mean, looking at it is clear there are very smart people behind it, which implies it has a higher purpose, But then sometimes it is like they are just taking the piss. So I'm now just willing to open my mind. What is the consensus around here?

クソアニメですわ

Rick and Morty of anime?

I don't know, in what sense do you mean that?

By your description it is figuratively the Sup Forums of anime

youre asking too many questions

It is a shitpost, but there are 7 episodes as we speak and not a single mention of cuckoldry has been made so the Sup Forums comparison doesn't hold. I will keep checking though.

I wouldn't call it the Rick and Morty of anime, I would call it the Perry Bible Fellowship of manga and anime.

Scientifically speaking, what do you mean?

It just feels like a japanese version of all the 3AM adult swim cartoons.

Robot Chicken of anime. Same format and everything.

Ok, it seems that this thread is going in various directions I didn't want to see it go. Let's simplify the question:

Does Poputepipikku have a deeper meaning?

If yes: What is it, and why?
If not: Why?

It's an audio-visual experiment being used to research tolerance thresholds from media.

It's just "that side of anime" but over 4000%

Like "that anime trope" "that anime humour" "that anime feel" "If you watched nime you'd get the joke"

It's like using salt when you cook, and a really good salty dish comes out

I can't explain it but it is great. I like it a lot.

Sweet Bro and Hella Jeff

at least the Bob Epic Team is

No. It's just anime. Something used for entertainment.

that actually makes it sound interesting. worth a watch?

I think it's more like having the salter's top come off and getting a dish that's 90% salt

Well, non-shit anime typically have deeper meanings. What's your point?

fuck that retarded ugly shit is the consensus

Poputepipikku is artistically ugly. As in, deliberately ugly. Everyone knows that. It is an artistic choice.

Super Milk-chan predates that. None of you kids even remember Super Milk-chan.

its still cancer, i don't find it funny. I find it revolting.

Well, high art is not for everyone.

>imblying you could recognize high art

But it's not ugly?

>PTE Episode 8 will be remade and shown 8 times in a row.

I enjoy their humor.

...

Bob Team Epic
Also the other sprinkles of deliberately bad animation

I honestly don't know. I read a bit of the manga and now I've seen a couple episodes. I can't tell if I like it or not. It's bad for the sake of being bad. Nothing really makes sense. Sometimes it makes me chuckle a bit. But at the same time it's not really funny.

damn this shit is asian as fuck
is all anime like this?

Sorry, what? I was thinking about Hellshake Yano.

i feel the same way about literally all satirical shows

...

>14 years old
>7th grade
Do they start start school early or something?

This is a good example. Hellshake Yano is abstract as fuck. In one episode it is thrown out of nowhere, and I thought it was an obscure reference so I looked it up but got nothing. Then in the NEXT episode they actually kinda explain the joke by telling us what Hellshake Yano is, and it turns out they literally made him up themselves. So the original joke of "I was thinking about Hellshake Yano" doesn't even make sense in the concept of the first episode he is in, but then it does after a week. I just don't get it. Why do they have to make it so hard? Also, the way they presented the Yano story was amazing. So creative. But, scientifically speaking, what does it mean?

delet this

kurva anyatok

I see it just as the producer having fun and doing things that he would like to see, and then everybody is challenging the others and now we have a pilestock of Sup Forums and /jp/ references.

At least once every episode I've recognized one or two references and I laugh like an idiot, because I really wasn't expecting it, like the Undertale references or the Yakuza films on episode 8, it clearly shows they love the anime and the parodied material.

YOU DUMBASS

What is your post? Are you trying to be funny? Just ask what subgenre it is.

RINGO MOGIRE BEEEM

The joke is that idolfags live in the clouds.
The other joke is that Popuko is not any better, she wants to become a generic shounen character so basically both Popuko and Pipimi are deluded bitches.
At least that's my take on it, I really don't know.

Can't wait for season 2 to be announced.

>watched episode 7
>laughed my ass off of the Antonio Inoki reference
>absolutely nobody mentioned it on Sup Forums

Ah, perfect

The joke is you don't know shit so you'll believe whatever they tell you, and they went overboard

How much manga material they have used? Would there be enough for S2?

I TURNED MYSELF INTO A SLICE OF BACON, MORTY!!
I'M BACON RIIIIIICK

it was on adult swim, I sure alot of people remember that show

Surreal comedy, for me, isn't exactly made to be funny. It's made to be something fresh, new and exciting, different from other comedies, but also with comedy. Poptepipic, Ai Mai Mii, Teekyuu and many others fill this niche perfectly for me and this is why I love them.

I had to call my dad so he would assure me Let's pop together was a Earth wind and fire parody

>Scientifically speaking, what even is this?
'How to exploit memelords on the Internet and make money in the anime industry with the least effort possible'.

I mean later, I was 14 in 9th grade

It's more like those fish that are roasted completely buried in salt to lock in the moisture

I cracked up at the Big Budoukan pun at the start of the Hellshake Yano skit. It was just something as simple as the Budoukan with Big the Budo's head on top but I started laughing like nuts.

>It's made to be something fresh, new and exciting
But fails to be any of these things

It's about cute girls doing cute (vulgar) things.

It's the robot chicken of anime

The HELLSHAKE YANO segment and the songs were a good example of all of those.

So unless you're versed in Japanese pop culture and obscure memes you won't be able to enjoy it. Okay.

Where do you think you are

Yes, but no, there's things funny just for the sake of it, like the I'm not mad sketch or the Skeleton Race, it's just the most basic kind of humor, the unexpectance and change of the result

>So unless you've actually watched an anime before in your entire life you won't be able to enjoy it.
Yes, now please go back to your board of origin.

Yes, that's the spirit.

>kids these days don't listen to easy listening radio

gag manga on popular culture based on the author's own views

>finally watch latest episode
>suddenly a MOTHERFUCKING GUILTY GEAR REFERENCE

Not really. It is clear that the anime is cheap but not because it is produced under A-1 pictures Mc Donald's conditions. It is cheap because of the nature of the manga it is adapting, and instead of using that cheap budget to power a sweatshop, they instead use that to get as many new creators in as they can. There are animators whose first industry job is Pop Team Epic, and those new animators get complete creative control of their section. It doesn't get more artistic than that.

Among pretentious memelords
I watch comedy to laugh at things that are universal, I don't want to take a course on Japanese memes to smile at the gags. Also, I know a lot of people here cream their underwear at the sight of their favorite games and memes being referenced on it, but references aren't comedy. References are cheap attempts at humor with ZERO effort on the part of the creator. Dispute this in any way you want, but in the end PTE is shallow and hollow as a humor show.
By the way, the are you mad sketch is literally Sup Forums humor. But maybe that's what the PTE audience is comprised by after all.
This is my board origin, kid. I finished Joshiraku almost a decade before you were introduced to the 'hilarious Japanese memes' of PTE.

It's like Joshiraku in that you have to be Japanese to really get it.

Well, first of all it's just an absurd show full of references. Yet while it doesn't provide any criticism of the industry, it really often goes meta to the point of a commond YouTube video shitpost. Hence, taking into consideration all the effort and number of people working on the series, the fact that it's being aired on TV and that thinking of Hellshake Yano was at some point the fourth most popular hashtag on Japanese twitter, it's just a very very very ellaborate shitpost.

Please don't offend Joshiraku comparing it with this garbage.

PTE is quite easier to get it though.

was the bacon thing a reference making fun of rick and morty I'm not sure how to feel about it

Yes, Rick and Morty invented talking food.

Please don't offend Pop Team Epic by comparing it with this garbage.

Well I saw people in this thread memeing rick and morty so I figured it might have been a reference of some sort. I don't watch Rick and Morty so I don't know anything about the stupid pickle rick shit other than what I see online.

The Pickle Rick segment and PTE gags are exactly on the same level of humor.

don't ask. You're not ready.

It's called trash. A bunch of random memes and pop culture references from 2ch. Without any substance.

Who needs substance if it can make you laugh?

If you don't, you are a hater anyway.

>if it can make you laugh
But it can't

Wow, you were old enough to read in 2009? That surely makes you older than a guy laughing at a pun based on a series from the early 80's.

...

You know what’s better than this shitty show? Ai Mai Mi

>Ai Mai Mi

What garbage.

Yes, but PTE doesn't take itself as serious as the muhover200IQshow that pretends to be intelligent while just vomiting pseudo-science.

...

>A SLICE OF BACON
>SLICE

Ranch or cool ranch?

>comedically structured criticism of the anime industry
No, it's a comedically structured criticism of the consumer side of it rather than the industry itself.

I can only imagine how much the nips hate it. They despise anything that parodies shit they like or breaks the mold in any way

>he doesn't know

Surprised this of all things hasn't been parodied yet

I think the fact that it's so abstract and you're asking this question, it's doing exactly what it wants.
Not that that's worth the praise.
I love the 4-komas, but despite the show pretty much grasping the same feeling and humor, watching it in animated form doesn't really do much for me, I get more out of these through highlight reels I find on YouTube than watching a full episode.
For every cool idea the show has, there's so much padding of jokes done in the original panels, or stuff that just isn't funny, which intentional or not, doesn't really make me want to keep watching and just something else on instead.
I wouldn't mind that it's basically a sketchshow, but sketchshows always have a tendency of either being tolerable or complete shit, and it hurts me to say that this show is between that spectrum.
I really want to like this show, but I honestly can't.

What did I miss

I'd say they're on the same level. Ai mai mi anime is like those long form space cat company skits which is alright but it doesn't have crazy bullshit like music videos, sand art and fucking hellshake yano, and manga is even more hit or miss than PTE.

This is an existential masterpiece of present time

Like, half of the Japanese companies twitted Hellshake Yano, from cellphone operators to sports items producers,
