this show doesn't look nearly as good as people rave about. it's actually mindboggling how overrated the visuals are, it looks like a shitty video game half the time.

They're born as just vaguely human-shaped rocks and are then carved into their current forms by Sensei. As such, they all have basically the exact same body shape.
