I feel like everyone's (whos not underaged) first anime that they had access to was DBZ, Sailor Moon, etc. Mine was Digimon and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
A better question would be the first anime that you decided to watch on your own outside of broadcasting which was Infinite Stratos and Bakemonogatari

How the hell can anyone remember which was the first anime they watched? Most likely the 99% of people first anime was Pokemon or Dragon Ball, now I have a special memory of watching Evangelion at 6, but i'm pretty sure I must have seen other stuff before that. Now the first anime I watched on my own PC on my own decision was Dokuro-chan on parts in youtube.

Pokemon is the obvious one but I wouldn't say thats what got me into anime. I also watched FMA back when it was airing on toonami but still wouldn't call that my entrance
I think the real one was Toradora. I remember after that I got real into drama anime and romance which in turn got me into SoL, comedy, etc. Started trying out all the different genres after that, started watching the classics, started browsing Sup Forums. Drama/romance are still my favorite though

All I vaguely remember is that they have a penguin that accompanies them.

Anime entered late in my country and I didn't have internet to download it myself, so my first anime was Yugioh. This was in exactly in 2000 and I was 11 at the time.

Howl's moving castle was the first anime I ever watched.
Ghost in the Shell was the first anime I watched as a teenager and got me into anime, where I eventually found out the Ghibli movies were also anime.
Azumanga Daioh was the first anime I watched drunk.

My earliest memory was the Turner dub of Gatchaman.

The furthest back I can recall clearly was Sailor Moon, which aired on weekdays before I had to go to school.

I remember when I was a kid I would watch sailor moon and pull my socks up really so that they kinda looked like stockings. Sailor moon was a mistake.

Even back then Sup Forumsnon wanted to be the little girl.

Captain Tsubasa and other depressing 80s anime where fuckton of people died. Then Pokemon, Dragon Ball, Digimon and anything Rumiko Takahashi made and was turned into animation.

In Italy we've had anime since the 70s and old anime reran on television until late 90s anyway.
