No. Gon is a great character, but he's too reactionary in the broader context of the story to really carry any of the drama. Which is why is true.

Also Hell just about every other character in HunterXHunter has some kind of long term driving goal moving them along. Gon is just trying to figure himself (and his dad) out. The problem is that Gon is such a simpleton that this doesn't make for terribly interesting character introspection. He's got his moments sure, but again, they're predominantly reactionary.
