Pickleman is a good father, balancing out Chichi's overprotective nature by forcing Gohan to man the fuck up, take responsibility and learn how to properly handle danger. Goku never cared to do that shit. If it weren't for Pickleman, Chichi's overprotective nature would result in Gohan becoming an insecure, sheltered nerd who's afraid of anything and collapses in the face of even the slightest dang- OH WAIT.

At least he's involving on his kid growth. Goku doesn't even seem to understand that he had some sort of duty to raise them.

Pickle needed Gohan to become super strong in order to beat the Saiyans, so naturally the hardest training was required. Given his lonely upbringing, the companionship and pride he put into Gohan's results ended up resulting in a more caring Piccolo.

I like how at the end of the cell saga Piccolo has fully evolved into the family uncle and a surrogate father for Gohan
