what

Isekai is on top of being wish fulfillment, satisfies a lot of things that autism and weakness promotes.
>Simplistic world building
>Being in control
>Being the creator, getting credit for everything done
>Getting to spurg out all the video games and manga you've played and read into one place

Isekai can be an interested concept, but now it's basically a parody of the worst elements and used as an excuse to not have to actually write a story.

unfortunately many so-called anime fans can not differentiate isekai from fantasy or science fiction, unfortunate because it shows how narrow is this view of these fans, as well as do not know how to differentiate sensuality from fanservise, or mature sex from hentai.

>isekai from fantasy or science fiction
Those aren't mutually exclusive, isekai can be fantasy or science fiction.

???

Mod deleted the chinaman thread holy shit

Why the fuck was the other thread deleted but this dead as shit one stays up?

prolly cause it started with a meme image and not a manga or anime image.

>Someone picked up doll princess
Only me feeling happy here?

what's that one?

>meme image
99% of the threads in Sup Forums start with "meme" images.

didn't new janitors get accepted recently?

...

whats it about?
yes

>The problem is you are already coming into this argument the wrong way. You demand to see the work they admire so you can critique it when it can be critiqued on it's own. If you want to defend it tell me which points you find far superior to most japanese novels and in return I will do my best to explain why I do not agree with those points.

Fair enough.

I know you can say that isekai as a genre caters to wish fulfillment, which is true, but I've think that Japanese novels take it to another level. I found this is usually done through two avenues: they overload the MC up with special powers and circumstances ("you're the only one that can do this" or they're given a special power that is ridiculously OP like Skill Thieving which is so fucking stupid and overdone in just about everything). Mushoku Tensei and SAO are obvious examples.

The other avenue is gratuitous fanservice and harem building, which to be fair happens in just about every Asian light novel but I feel is way overdone in Japanese novels in particular. Some fanservice is to be expected, but it should be earned by the MC and not just handed up on a silver platter at a rate that just comes off as masturbatory.

I guess the reason why I like Korean novels in particular is because, at least in the ones I've read, the MC doesn't really get overloaded with unique "muh special powers" at the very start and often begin at a significant disadvantage. Generally they start with their brains and cunning and have to keikaku their way up the ladder, which can be an advantage or disadvantage depending on the author's ability to write convincing challenges and plot points. I've used Dungeon Defense as an example not because I think it's an incredible work of literature, but because it has an absence of those two points that I find the most grating to read.

quietly create dolls

i want kongo sensei to rape me!

Generalizing will make any arguments shaky at best, it would be better if you just focused on why Dungeon Defense does a better job than other comparable novels.

>generic 'femMC reincarnated as villainess of otoge' setting
>immediately decide to stay as far away as possible from anything related to the game and it's protag
>practice magic and stuff for guarantee
>has an unique magic to animate dolls to do her bidding
>rather than animating dolls she's actually pulling souls of heroes/villains/deities of the past an having them possess them
>gradually ends up becoming a last boss existence

But Dungeon Seeker checks all of those boxes. The protagonist HAS special powers and knowledge from his game that works to his advantage in the face of foes who are far beyond him. It HAS a harem, it's just a really wonky one. My problem is that at least with Dungeon Seeker the keikaku is entirely undeserved.

A good example of this is the first real "keikaku" where he convinces his peers that he is innocent and that all of it is a grudge against him. The entire thing is just so hollow. His dramatic "victories" over his opponent, his arguments, it's all undeserved. "I know she actually likes humans!" "I know they won't actually care about that sack of shit!" None of it was a challenge and it never felt as if he was in real danger. This is the kind of amateur writing designed to make a cunning protagonist whose cunning is only in comparison to the villains who essentially drop their spaghetti in front of him. Now I'm not saying it's better or worse than any japanese isekai, but it isn't good. It very much isn't good.

That looks really promising plotwise.
Time to dig in.

And the you have Chinksekai wich spawned a genre about a self insert coming into an existing property.

Also for wathever stranger reason Isekai has more NTR per page than even Shoujo stuff, or at least the popular ones.

I don't know if they are that creatively challenged but the settings for it just repeat themselves even if they aren't a revenge fantasy.

Heck I know that rape is sometimes a cheap tool to illustrate a character as being bad and is overused as an introduction to a character but when you introduce a plethora of characters who only gimmick is some elements of NTR as their gimmicks it's just sad.

>I guess the reason why I like Korean novels in particular is because, at least in the ones I've read, the MC doesn't really get overloaded with unique "muh special powers" at the very start and often begin at a significant disadvantage.
I like this trope too but most of the time I don't really think they can pull it off properly. Actually they're even worse than generic shonenshit.

To be honest the one thing I hate more than an overpowered protagonist is an overpowered protagonist who is written to be underpowered.

i guess at the end of the day. $$$.

any lists out there that display anime each season on a spectrum from $$$ to quality/effort/art

for example 1-10. 1 being $$$
Violet Evergarden: 5 (effort is there. you can argue about the pacing and plot progression or just the plot but it's not about a bunch of lolis playing shogi.)
Overlord: 5 (fairly good quality for an isekai. A story arc focused around lizard people instead of highschool girls lol)
Darling in the FranXX: 3 (focused on selling but puts quality/effort into getting those dollars)
Nanatsu no Taizai: 3 (not sure desu.)
Citrus: 1 (porn for people haven't discovered JAV)
Death March: 1 (compared to overlord this isekai is shit)
Poputepipkku: 5 (not really sure on this one desu)
Koi wa Ameagari no You ni: 4 (it's a good shoujo but shoujo is a dumb genre for little girls)
Yuru Camp: 5 (comfy camping with HS girls) #educational
Beatless: 2 (girls)
Sora yori mo tooi Basho: 4 (HS girls. premise is acceptable and WTF but progression is decent.)
Grancrest Senki: 3 (rags to riches story. characters kind of meh. not sure if well this show is selling. might have wanted to go full DxD considering the quality is... meh)
Fate/Extra: 2 (porn)
Killing Bites: 1 (lol)
Hakata Tonkotsu Ramens: 5 (
Ryuuou no Oshigoto!: 1 (loli)
Saiki Kusuo No Psi-nan 2: 5 (comedy)
Toji no Miko: 1 (girls)
Slow Start: 4 (MC is a fairly round character and the premise is acceptable.)
Ramen Daisuki Koizumi-san: 2 (highschool girls eating ramen. Characters are shit but at least the ramen/setting is alright). It should have gone with gintama-esque characters/comedy in combination with the advertising.
Hakumei no Mikochi: 8 (it's not about cute highschool girls)
Takunomi.: 1 (advertisement)
Sanrio Danshi: 1 (advertisement)
GdMen: 5 (not really quality or money. Not sure what the fuck they're doing lol. For the lulz?)

Not him but I didn't find his keiakakus so bad. Actually, I found them better written than those of other "smart" MCs.
That said, I do believe that he needs to meet his match already, someone as smart as him who can offer him a challenge. The princess is clearly one of those but it seems she will fuck off for quite a while since Dantalian is going back to the Demon continent to deal with internal shit.
I just hope one of the enemy Demon Lords can challenge him intelectually because you are right when you say that all the other people he faced so far were fucking retards.
I think the worst example is the bisexual trannie Demon Lord that works for Paimon (don't even remember her name) who declared herself Dantalian's enemy and promised to stand in his way only to get BTFO by the princess in the next chapter.

Thread hijack, lol.
>My problem is that at least with Dungeon Seeker the keikaku is entirely undeserved.
>Dungeon Seeker
Is this a typo or does Dungeon Seeker also have a keikaku plot you described?

>Japan
Beta dies and becomes OP for no explainable reason. Remain a mental virgin and cuck yourself, yet women throw themselves at you. You make it your new life goal to save everyone in the kingdom.
>China
Power is justice. Rape is okay if you trick/force her into liking you. You are super haxor character, you know everything and nothing can ever beat you.
>Korea
Healthy balance of being OP and getting your shit kicked in. Train to overcome your faults. One true love instead of harem. Find meaning in your new life.

Koreans continue to be best Asians.

Oh that one about her becoming the last boss/demon lord or whatever. Sounds interesting too bad it's otome shit.

KINO Seeker is so good its begun to override readers memories of other isekais with itself.

Dungeon Seeker isn't from an in universe game and it's also not a harem.

does taiwan produce art/culture? any examples? i know they make really shitty dramas but that's it

He is talking about Dungeon Defense but messed up the names. I think.

Otoge settings are the otome equivalent of harem shit but very slightly better on average
after some point you can't really be picky

>alpha mc thread deleted
>self deprecating beta thread remains
Hmm.
'chad chinaman.jpg'

I dropped Ouroboros Record around chapter 10 becuase the MC succeeding at everything too easily became boring and all his companions being brainwashed dolls was kind of shit.
Did it improve or do anything interesting in the latest chapters?

I'm not sure what you're even trying to say quoting me, but most people don't write isekai for money, they write it because it's the simplest most wish fulfillment story type that allows the reader to use their background knowledge to fill in all the gaps. Most of the stories are over after the first 1-2 chapters when all the stuff happens, and then the author just fills it with random garbage from there.

If you've ever imagined yourself in different animes or manga, in different scenarios, or in a video game world for fun (I know I do, I've been doing it for years before I go to sleep). Isekai is literally throwing that on paper, except with copyright law you need to change things up which is why you end up with the most generic setups.

nope, don't bother looking back
go read DD instead if you want a villain MC, though it's not really that good either even if you survive the first volume

>350 chapters to deflower best girl
Thanks again for the user recommending PL x IC

A shame, it seemed promising. I lost interest when it was revealed that not only is he super smart and has an ultra-strong assassin waifu but also has magical equipment that protects him from all damage, felt too much bullshit for my taste.
I'm already reading DD. I really like amoral MCs who use their brain rather than their powers, even though it makes the plot 100 more stupid than more generic isekai stories when it's not done properly.

If you haven't read Wuxia Isekai (chinese isekai about martial art worlds) do yourself a favor and read one for a bit. They're pretty much all the same, but it's an experience you don't want to miss out on.

I honestly really like the chinese setup. The idea of clans/sect, the mannerisms, and the martial art based world. It's too bad most stories blow the MC up into a god.
If a Wuxia story had a MC that didn't become insanely powerful too quickly, and the power creep didn't blow out of proportions too quickly, then it would shine head and tails above the rest.
Just the way people act in the stories is so much different than how characters in western medieval fantasies act

Man, doesn't it feel awkward when you walk in on your BFF fapping to you?

i.4cdn.org/tg/1520231303087.pdf

Yes and no.

While it's an easy genre to write for because everything can be about wish fulfillment for the reader, a small handful of writers aren't lazy and continue to push the genre in interesting directions. You will have to swim through a mile of shit, but you will find a few diamonds along the way.

Are there any novels you've found that have managed to pull it off well? I tried reading No Game No Life but there was just so much contrived garbage and shitty fanservice that I gave up.

>Beta dies and becomes OP
Wish this meme would die already. There are loads of isekai with successful or just normal people.

How about trying YMA then? MC is not amoral by any means but is completely powerless and only has his brains going for him

Your and My Asylum? I'm reading it too.
I was the user complaining that MC treating his "war" against high school bullies as some sort of great conflict was autistic as fuck. I like it anyway, though I'm not a fan of footstuff and it's edgy as fuck from time to time.

Mushoku would have benefiting greatly by reducing his power level at younger ages and stretching it out into his 20s. The entire university part was really stupid too. It was a decent enough read, but it was one of the first isekai I got into, so I'm not sure how much I'd enjoy going back. Overall I recognize it did a lot of things well, but it has a few more flaws than I would have liked in a story.

Sorry that was a typo. I meant defense.

>Legendary Moonlight Sculptor
>regarded as a masterpiece
>right in chapter one, the game character is sold for 3 billion won ( 2,7 mil USD)
Really now?

>tfw you'll never be as handsome as rudeus.

You are right, but so is the original statement. Sadly the leap into OP status stories exceed the normal MC Isekai.

checking my documents and I found a bunch of LN folders, I forgot I made a bunch of custom folder icons for my PC.

Never forget.

>Wuxia
Almost all of that shit is Xuanhuan. Name 3 Wuxia Isekai stories.

Rudeus suffers from babyface, Paul is more handsome.
The only really handomse Rudeus is Punished Rudeus.

What is it called?

well then I guess I have nothing else to offer, stuff like Eliza and bookworm are more of my tastes

punish rudeus is looking badass.

The other problem I have with th MC of Seeking Dungeon Defense is that his morality is fucking all over the place. Like he starts off with some vague notion of right and wrong, and is disturbed and disappointed about how everyone he thought was great in the game turned out to be scummy or just terrible. And then of course there is the fact that he didn't want to kill that slaver kid and even felt kinda bad he was robbing him. Then all of a sudden he drops all that and turns into a psycho, and most of it is because RANDOMLY he suddenly falls in love with Lala. Even though the only signs of interest he previously showed in her was "I think I can use her to fuck with the bank guys"

And then this leads into my other big issue. Every other character. Lala is just god awful in most ways, I find her incredibly tiresome but of course personal opinion and all that. The demon loli is just the cliche "rowdy demon" archetype. The rival demon lord that he humiliates is another stock archetype and they don't really bring anything new to the table. The "we used to be friends possibly lesbian sexual tension" angle does little to make their head butting enticing or anything. And the princess? God it's like every edge isekai female character in one and spiced up with the usual isekai keikaku protagonists mind.

why isn't it Atlas inside that folder instead?

I didn't mind his show of power during his youth. The story shows him working hard to earn it and he was still getting beat by his father, Ghyslaine, and Ruijerd. The university part dragged on far too long and a lot of it should have been condensed or omitted.

...

>All my favorite places to read my trash Isekai are now getting flooded with shitty chinese isekais
I love trash espcially Isekai, but somehow these chinese shit heads even ruin this for me.

Damn right it is.

I'm also saying that towards all isekai generally, didn't mean to only pin that on Korean novels. JP isekai is also shit at that but they usually start off pretty overpowered anyway. It's pretty hard to find gritty survivor-type MCs, let alone well-written ones. I wish there were one, though. I haven't read Twelve Kingdoms though so maybe that's a decent one. It's not exactly what I'm looking for, since I want a story like old school RPGs, where the MC is transported deep inside a labyrinth then has to survive from there using everything he's got (and maybe some dumb luck).

The edge is weird in YMA though. It's not consistent and that goes for the tone in general. I struggle to read it because of that.

ABANDON HUMANITY

→ YES NO

>hard work
>makes some figurines as a kid
>now he's a demi-god

>Like he starts off with some vague notion of right and wrong, and is disturbed and disappointed about how everyone he thought was great in the game turned out to be scummy or just terrible.
I don't remember him ever being amoral, unless you are taking into account that retarded prologue where the MC does have a personaiity that has nothing in common not only with how he is through the story but also how he is in that same volume. It feels like the author had a different MC in mind, changed his mind after the prologue and no one bothered to change that.
Aside from that, MC is really a dick, he is slightly better than all the other assholes because he is trying to save the world and also because he tends to be pragmatic about his evilness.
>there is the fact that he didn't want to kill that slaver kid and even felt kinda bad he was robbing him
When was this? I don't remember.
>Lala is just god awful in most ways, I find her incredibly tiresome but of course personal opinion and all that
Lala just needs to get something to do. So far she is only there to abuse Dantalian or fuck him even though she was introduced as something of an equal to him.
>The demon loli is just the cliche "rowdy demon" archetype
I actually like Barbatos when they don't focus on her being kinky. She seems like a generic edgelord at first but the reveal that she was a different person in the past and the shit that turned her into an edgy necromancer is interesting.
>The rival demon lord that he humiliates is another stock archetype and they don't really bring anything new to the table
Yeah, even when the reveal that isn't a mere retarded moralfag I still don't find Paimon that interesting. I hope she can get a chance to shine and catch my interest now that she is Dantalian's ally.

What are some examples of consistently edgy series?
>inb4 Dungeon Seeker

There was one story I read ages ago and I seriously can't find it. But it had all the usual shit, only the MC was super weak. If I remember correctly, and I really don't, but it was something like he was physically incapable of mastering his chi or yin or yang or whatever the fuck it is. He just couldn't do it. So he fought really underhandedly and everyone hated him for it. It was interesting but I never did get all that far in it before I lost it and never found it again.

Kinda considering how it basically says hey you need to insert yourself here blatantly out to your face

The slaver kid was the one who was in charge of the tactical princess. Dandelion didn't mind the kid even though he was manipulating him and his plan was to steal the girl and leave him high and dry or something like that, then Lala walks up edgy as shit and just murders the poor bastard as Dandy is like "What the fuck was that for?" and utterly shocked at what she did.

The edge increases or decreases depending on how much screentime the loli gets.
She is easily the most annoying and edgy character and the worst part is that she will probably end up being reedemed.

I want a Xianxia MC isekai'd into a JP isekai world/story. It'd be fucking hilarious.
>Permanent Keikaku mode
>Kowtow to this daddy
>Jade Skin
>Best part is no one in that world cares about any of that shit

hmm. any examples of these interesting directions? I guess a better example would be are isekai's the superhero movies of anime.

>Seeking Dungeon Defense
Top kek
>And then this leads into my other big issue. Every other character. Lala is just god awful in most ways, I find her incredibly tiresome but of course personal opinion and all that. God it's like every edge isekai female character in one and spiced up with the usual isekai keikaku protagonists mind.
I will not try to defend it but it's not like any other isekai have unique characters too kek. At least DD's prose (or the translation) is clean and tidy. Maybe that's why people like it more than others despite the cliches.

Probably. That's the thing about the weirdness of the edge. The only way she can fall into depravity (and probably die) is if the edge ramps up but it keeps shifting into lighter territory. So going that way will probably be super jarring.

I honestly can't name a single edgy series that stays consistent. Even Summoned Slaughter for all the fucking hilarious chuuni edge that guy has is weirdly light at times.

But they explained that. He didn't care about the kid, he was just trying to impress Lapis and he thought she didn't want him to such an edgelord so he spared that dude for that.
Granted, it links to you complaint about Dantalian being in love with Lala being a stupid thing, but (though I did find it a bit forced) I did like it how Dantalian was confused as fuck through that volume because he is an edgy autist who never fell in love before and didn't know how to act.

I'd love to have a story of the life of a isekai bandit in one of those worlds
He could live in a little shitty village, using his knowledge to help make things easier
He would attack caravans with his buddies and barely make it out alive when experts hunt down the bandits.
The life of a bandit who steals from the rich and helps the poor. A chinese robin hood

I don't know, all the torture shit in the first volume was pretty edgy and established her as a shit person.
I mean, you can't get more edgy than "captured and tortured trannei angel being used to produce heavenly milk so an evil noble loli can drink it whenever she wants".

Having multiple males going after you is gay tho.

ouroboros

most revenge isekai really

>I'm nothing special, just X
I fucking hate this shit so much. Fuck anyone who thinks phrases like those are cool.

They also all have the worst romances imaginable. Like holy shit if you thought Jap Romance is bad this will make you claw your own eyes out.

>consistent edgy series
>not DS
Isn't DS pretty consistent with its edge?

>he didn't care about the kid
Unless I'm not remember it correctly he very much saw the kid as a naive but respectable lad
>he was trying to impress Lapis
Uh no. He wasn't. That shit came around the time he started to murder Lapis" "mother" to impress her

>Getting to spurg out all the video games and manga you've played and read into one place

Then why do most just rip off dragon quest and the way they make their magic/skill/leveling system feel like they've never actually played an rpg before?

only if you're male
also
>not being a little girl

Dungeon Seeker isn't even consistent. There's adorable love bullshit in it.

>MC is a quiet distanced kid.
>Even though he has friends, he never speaks to them at school and is very diligent with his schoolwork.
>Is part of the track team and the archery club.
>people have been wondering why MC turned so quiet and distanced lately.
>on the day of the first year field trip, MC gets Isekaid
>The twist is, this is the 20th time MC has been isekaid.
>Everytime he ends his life in the other worlds, the gods put him back at the 2nd month of school, and he has to repeat everything.
>The dude is now over 600 years old, has had wives and children, but everytime his life ends in the other world he keeps getting put back into same place in time.

Whats it called?

Dark Souls isn't anime user.

>Not being a little girl with a ton of girls going after you.

Isn't this the princess pretending to be a dude one?

If you want some chinese garbage, checkout
>Tales of Demons and Gods
I read it on mangahere

It's kinda fun. The MC is thrown back in time to when he was a child with all the knowledge he's gains. His home village/town/nation was destroyed in the future which forced him and others to travel the world. He learned that there's more to the world than what they thought was the entire world (frog in a well) and gained knowledge and power beyond anything they previously had. Now he uses that all to be super OP and have a solution to literally every problem. Still enjoyable though, it doesn't take itself too seriously and the chapters are 7-10 pages each

>Unless I'm not remember it correctly he very much saw the kid as a naive but respectable lad
He liked the kid but not enough to want to spare him if it wasn't for his love autism.
>Uh no. He wasn't. That shit came around the time he started to murder Lapis" "mother" to impress her
But it was related to that.
When he said he would murder Lapis' mother she got mad at him and she thought she was angry because he was being too much of an edgelord so he tried to act like a nice guy when it came to killing the kid merchant to make her happy, only to piss her off even more.
It wasn't till the end of the volume that he realized she just wanted to be pragmatic, since killing her mother didn't bring him any benefits and sparing that kid would have brought him a lot of troubles. He even points out he wouldn't have made such stupid decisions if his feelings for Lapis weren't fucking up his juggement.

that's gay tho
