I kinda liked the fact that it didn't look like the usual modern, realistic KyoAni (look at pic related). Pastel watercolour backgrounds worked great for them.
They made everything a bit more cartoonish, a bit less eye-grabbing, but surprisingly, they did not sacrifice much detail.
