you're missing what this show is about completely. Understand their ability to pilot their mecha is proportional to their compatability with their partner emotionally. This is why when these kids hit puberty all the adults get hyper interested in them. And why all the mecha pilot/kids die when they hit puberty. When there is no sexual emotions involved and platonic feelings only, everything works just fine. Granted they don't get a lot out of them but it works alright.
What we're seeing is developing relationship drama in "cross pairs" which will of course ruin the relationships the current partners have with each other and lead to their deaths. At least that is how it's worked with other groups. Of course interestingly, Goro and Ichigo might survive if Ichigo can ever get over Hiro. The problem is Milkman. He's going to get himself, his partner, fatty and Koko killed by pursuing Koko, of course that's assuming he's successful.
