Its kind of not episodic where a lot of stories are told within the stories of stories. The narrative is not always said but is always felt. The time frames are as wild as they get yet you are never left empty handed. Its the kind of show I watch for the 6th time and its different every time.

GITS, Eva and Bebop are all a million times better in HD because they're cel animated though. They were drawn crystal clear on the cels themselves, the image quality was just reduced for the shows themselves due to the limitations of the time. When you watch in HD, you're watching what the animators were actually drawing.

I really wouldnt know about eva and gits HD but i have compared 720p bebop to the crt variant and while both are amazing CRT just has that little bit of foil on top like you were ment to see it today. Kind of like a more centric focus. Especially neon reds, they have this bloodshot color. Boogiepop aint got no HD game... sadly.
Its only worth it if you have one lying around. Those fuckers are heavy and uncomfortable but they do work out when need be.

technically around half of the characters are mc in the anime. The perspective is ever changing but the context is always there and heavy without really being explained much.
the novels dont really help much... they are shabby. Its the kind of show that told the artist let us use your names and images and we will make magic happen.
I think Touka got a fair representation in the anime. At the end of the day she has to be the most low profile kid she can be.

Boogiepop is about supernatural crap happening around the city as a result of aliens and a mysterious organization using alien's dna to create super humans. Boogiepop is an alternative personality of a seemingly normal highschool girl called Touka Miyashita (or something supernatural possessing her, it's ambiguous). Boogiepop manifests in Touka whenever something dangerous threatens the city. There are others characters who are in the know and try to investigate what's going on and such.
The format of the story is generally some people getting involved into shit too big for them to deal with, and when it things everything's going to shit, Boogiepop shows up to save the day.
Although Boogiepop's the titular character and protagonist of sort, most the time we follow other characters' point of view.

Being familiar with Boogiepop and Others helps a lot by giving context to what's happening. Even if the events aren't massively relevant, Phantom's style makes it hard to follow and that context helps a lot.

I sort of feel you on that one. I just cant help but be devoured by the atmosphere and tension the show constantly generates. At the end of the day i sort of feel better the less i can recall from it while experiencing it fully.
Its like every time you watch it you realize you've missed a few pieces of the puzzle. I wouldnt really go as far as to say you need to know all of it since the show runs on instinct. There is however a 28 page world doc where a guy chronologically explains everything that ever was and is(including anime and novels).
I have read it but i'd imagine it would really drain the soul out from it from some one who didnt understand it anyway.

I dunno, last time I watched it I felt I understood pretty much everything that was going on, and I enjoyed it all the more that way.
I do think you could kill the atmosphere if you try to go through it slowly and piece things together that way. But I think that'd be pretty hopeless anyway.
Put it this way: it think it helps the show to know who Echoes is, despite the fact that he only shows up for a few frames and in Snake Eye's monologue.
