If anything, EVA01 is either a semipilotable kaiju or a giantess with a mindcontroling womb-cockpit. EVAs require sacrificing humans to be made, can bleed, are basically pseudo-religious avatars of mankind that can't live long without fuckhuge amounts of manpower, and most importantly are not MECHAnical. They aren't entirely man made, can't be debugged, can't live forever, and aren't servicable by ordinary mechanics.
Gundam is definitely more widely recognized outside of the anime community than EVA01. Gunpla used to be sold at Toys-R-Us.

Asuka Langley Soryu falls in love with Shinji Ikari.

As a non-gundam watcher, I couldn't tell you the first thing about that mech. I don't know which gundam show it's from (there's a billion of them). If it wasn't for the filename I couldn't even have said for certain that it was a gundam at all.
