I don't know how people can be so autistic. In this movie all the ships have been stagnant using Asuka sisterly relationship as an escape. Asuka is the way to keep things safe for now and gain time.
The only "problematic" ships for Kumiko (until now) are Reina and Shuuichi. Shoe was her boyfriend in the novels and remain her romantic interest.
The problem here is that Kyoani has not followed this route. Shuu in the anime may be remain as a romantic interest because the original work, but his role has been clearly stolen by Reina.
So in the anime canonically speaking

Thinking this is plainly stupid. They already did it with Reina. The issue is the incongruity that exists between the anime and the original work, not if this is Reina or Asuka. If Asuka had been her romantic interest in the anime from the beginning, the same thing would have happened.
They didn't want Hibike become a shoujopoi anime so with this excuse they decided to do it yuri (in the closet) and moreover it's also what the novels seemed to them (at least the first volume).
And the funny thing is that this has been a great success. Reina ship is by far more strong than the Shuuichi one. And here is where the mess is.
Now Kyoani are playing the safe route while put in terms of agreement with the original work. And that can perfectly finish open and without any ship sailing. But if Kumiko ends up with someone this will most likely be Shuuichi or Reina.
