I'm just guessing, but I think s2 was probably caught up with the LNs. Instead of going anime original, they decided to wait for more books to get published, but by that time they felt interest was lost. I'm personally hoping they eventually just start over from the beginning, but make it a 1:1 adaptation and make the artstyle closer to either Ayakura or Koume style.
On that note, how do you think an anime original season would have gone, good or bad? I think they'd turn it into an action story where Holo fights other giant animals.

Nah, in 2009 the books were at like vol. 10, (another half arc ahead of season 2). I heard it was because hasekura prematurely sold the rights and whoever bought them held out too long, and now believes it's no longer profitable to produce a third season. That's just what I remember reading from another thread, it could be complete bullshit, it could be because the just used the show as a tool to sell LN's.
