How does Gohan have fans after the Cell Saga?
In the Buu Saga, he became a lame superhero and sat still in front of Old Kai for hours. Then he dropped the Potara earrings and got absorbed, making his sit-training not amounting to anything
In Super, he jobbed to first form Freeza and has been pretty much absent outside slice of life until the ToP (even moreso in the manga)

1) Trunks got stronger:
> Trunks trains with Vegeta Blue (on-screen training)
> Commerical splash image shows Trunks training with Vegeta again, posing for Galick Gun (off-screen training)
> Trunks image-training in Capsule Corp
> Small time-skip, where Trunks continuously trains with Vegeta (after Goku visits Zeno, and while Bulma fixes the Time Machine). Bulma mentions that Vegeta has been training with Trunks before they leave to the Future.
2) Trunks transforming:
> SS transformation through rage isn't new and has several precendents (although this is first god-tier form obtained through rage)
> Black blames Trunks for sinning, since he traveled through time
> Black blames everyone deaths, including Future Bulma, on Trunks
> Trunks snaps and becomes SS Rage
> Trunks is a Saiyan-Hybrid with high potential
3) Why not SS3?
The only thing that may not make sense is that Trunks didn't transform into SS3.
However, he trained with Vegeta who NEVER had SS3. Instead, Trunks trained with someone who mastered his god ki training with Whis.
Visually, SS Rage:
> Looks like part of the standard Golden SS line
> With a mix of god-like SS aspects (the fiery-like god aura, the blue light around his body)
> Trunks hasn't mastered god ki, but he definitely got a taste of it from Vegeta

Goku didn't have the potential to win though, it's obvious that Jiren had lots of energy left, he just gave up because he thought he was outmatched by Goku's blanco form.
But he didn't know that Goku was out of energy in that form.
Take a soccer game for example, team A(goku) might outclass team B (jiren) for 30 minutes (blanco form) but the game lasts 90 minutes. Goku didn't eliminate Jiren in time, so he lost.
