None of the serious scenes in the No Hotaru part of this second season have really been that great until this episode with the manga rejection scene and the ending scene where Hotaru shows up. The atmosphere and scenario was set up perfectly. I was surprised. It's a shame the episode ended right there.

Also, surprised that Saya didn't mention how the main girl of his manga is literally Hotaru.

The first season was a mistake. They never should've done 24 min episode in the first season. It was so mind-numbingly boring to sit through 24 minutes of it. I always felt halfway through the episode that it should be over but it just kept going.

I have not watched season 2 at all but I'm guessing it works better as a 12 minute show.

The first season didn't sell that well, so it probably motivated the production comittee to turn it into a short anime for the second season to cut some of the losses.
That said I actually prefer it that way, the short format fits the anime better and the character design change wasn't bad either.

I felt torn about season 1. Like you, a lot of times I felt bored at some point during the 24 minutes. Now that the episodes are half that length there's nothing much to get bored about.

At the same time, there was a lot more candy trivia in the first season, which though sometimes boring, overall I enjoyed. I lived in Korea as a kid, and a lot of the cheap candy from my childhood was similar to the dagashi featured in the episodes, so it was nostalgic, and at times educational.
