In short, children are just genetically(?) adapted humans with dino genes to pilot Franxx. They are seen by plantation humans as mutants and biohazard, just like many children saw 02 as such.

So, to recap user's theory:
- Ichigo's love is platonic, which she doesn't realize because she is genuinely jealous of the amount (not the type) of attention Hiro is giving 02, the fact that she knows fuck-all about familial/cultish love, 02's own assumption (made out of ignorance) that Ichigo's feelings must be romantic, and the fact that familial bonds aren't exactly known for bestowing identity, which is why Ichigo idolizes Hiro so much
- This is hinted at by the "awful" kiss (which Ichigo lied about enjoying because she was just trying to use anything she could to undermine Hiro/02's relationship), Ichigo's apathy about Hiro piloting with Naomi, who was not a threat familially or "romantically", and her willingness to let him leave the plantation, and the ostensible fact that she only wanted to pilot with Hiro as a way of outdoing 02
- Her jealousy is also combined with concern, which is one reason she's accepted 02 more after the third flight was successful, and the reason she flashbacked to the kiss when she heard 02 was piloting with him a second time- she blamed the injuries she thought he would suffer on her failure to connect with him
