Tactics Ogre

So I've been wanting to git gud at this game for a while, but every time I pick it up I run into the same problem, and I was wondering if anyone could school me on how to get around it.

>be around level 45 (for example)
>get a new class-badge called the Shadow Rapist or whatever
>Shadow Rapist starts at level 1
>all the random encounters are scaled to around level 45, so if anyone as much as breaths in my Shadow Rapist's direction, he dies instantly
>meaning no experience for him that fight
>can never get around this because the enemy AI is hardwired to prey on the weakest, which will always be my level 1

So then I try to bring a few Shadow Rapists into the random battle to make sure at least one of them survives, but now I am no longer strong enough to beat up the level 45 enemies, so we lose and nothing is gained from the fight!

How the hell am I suppose to get new classes to level up in this game?

I FFT I could at least just go back a few nodes and fight some nice level 3 goblins or something, but putting a level 1 Shadow Rapist among level 45s that will hunt him above all others is borderline impossible.

Am I playing this wrong?

Can't you do the training thing where you make your units fight each other? You can get EXP that way.

Wh-what? That sounds useful but I don't recall such a feature? Is it something that unlocks much later in the game or something?

Is this the missing piece to my puzzle?

Pretty sure you could grind by keeping specific units at low levels and just running parties off of them so that enemies would be at low levels, but it's been so long that I could be totally wrong.

training has been removed in the psp version

I think you might be off on that.

When a class levels up, everyone with that class levels up with it. So unless you keep half-a-dozen (or enough to win a battle) classes at level 1, you can't really do it like this. Not to mention that there are some classes, like the healers, that are pretty mandatory, and will therefor always power ahead leveling wise.

Then how the fuck are you suppose to level up those brand new level 1 jobs? Especially when the enemy AI seems to work like this:

>1. Kill player escort-target, or player-friendly NPC.
>2. Hunt down the lowest level player-controlled character and murder him/her at all fucking costs.
>3. Kill what remains, lowest levels first.

I like to raise a bunch if lv 1 classes at the same time on tynemouth hill (like 3 lv1 rogues and 4 lv 1 ninjas all with bows for example)
don't bother with swordmasters though, they suck ass

It's pretty universally agreed that the leveling system was the worst part of this game OP.

The PSP version runs better.

Looks better.

Plays better.

And feels better.

But holy hell is it worse balanced. The removal of the training feature shows exactly how badly this leveling system is designed.

It's too bad too, because it's otherwise not a bad re-design.

they should've built upon the gameplay from the original and Knight Of Lodis tbqh
>KoL let you see how the enemies were placed in battle so you knew whether to bring your dragoon to battle or not
>the recruitment office let you adjust your recruit's level for a price

it had some good ideas
and A.I. training is a nice way of making grinding feel less tedious, all they needed to do was reduce the NEED for training and the importance of levels

I tried playing this game but the huge amount of units plus being able to rewind turns kinda put me off a bit

How is Knights of Lodis? I enjoyed LUCT and am open for an older title like it if it's on the same quality-level.

you have to change all your classes to lvl 1 and depending on your map the enemies will be between lvl1-28 depending on the battle map.

The easiest way to lvl a new class is to do the battle when you get canopus as a guest and have him a high lvl with a bow while all your other characters are around half his lvl

Use archers and have Denam be a duel wielding ninja. Congratulations, you've won tactics ogre.

Enemies in random battles match the highest level unit you field. Train new units together. It also nets those classes more exp because classes get exp based on number of participants.

it's slower, easier, has a worse story and OST, and you can't avoid random battles, however

>adjusting the level of recruits
>seeing enemy formations before deployment
>acquiring emblems in order to change classes and raise stats
>every class having at least one magic slot so the unit can do more than just attack
>every unit can recruit an enemy, which enemy is easier to recruit is based on your class
>quest mode
>training

honestly, every ogre title is a bit of a mixed bag
I found ogre battle 64 the most enjoyable

easy mode
>archers
>ninjas
>canopus
>any hammer wielding unit
>finishers with damage modified by TP (brimstone hail, tyrant's mace)
>rune fencers with conserve magic and boon of swiftness

>Chapter 1 and 2 is so fucking hard but 3 and 4 is a joke

Why can't they into balancing?

If you have finished the game at least once there is a simple way to farm xp for your new unit

>Take the first Anchor Point in the 4th chapter
>Take only Denam with a bow and the unit you want to level up
>One shot the mage-boss in the first turn
>Repeat as much as you want

If Denam cannot OS the boss bring another Archer with him, remove all the stuff except the bow so they can act faster.

>ogre battle 64

My nigga.

I've sunk hundreds if not thousands of hours into KoL due to traveling by car/bus a lot when it came out.

sums it up pretty nicely.

Also, don't level 20 or more times in training mode as you'll get a badge that removes your chance to crit. Since characters gain EXP like FFT, it's honestly easier to just have them use the cheapest healing items on someone way higher-level to get big exp gains

I always forget to ask this question in LUCT related threads, but does an undead unit with a maxed out Attenuate Light skill have a higher chance of evading exorcism?

This game has some of the best character design I've ever seen.

Why are always ninjas op in tactics games?

Play better, keep the level 1 suckers back and kill the enemies with your full level party members before your level 1s get threatened.

If you abuse archers like you should there should not be any danger of enemies getting anywhere near your weaker party members.

Speed. In turn based game ability to move first is always good.

In addition ninjas usually trade defense to offense, which is basically always good trade in tactics games.

Never used straight undead units because of the RT penalty, but can you evade exorcism with the spell evasion skill? If yes, my guess would be use that instead.

That said I've used ghosts before and I've never seen an enemy unit use exorcise when they were down, so I don't know if it's something you'd need to worry about.

Does attenuate light help mitigate undead unit's inherent weakness to light?

>people never discuss good SRPGs

>Does attenuate light help mitigate undead unit's inherent weakness to light?

yeah, it helps

Probably worth it for that alone then

I don't understand where SRPGs went.

Didn't the remake of LUCT sell well enough?

Did that not show that there IS a clear market for these things?

>Didn't the remake of LUCT sell well enough

no it didn't thanks to the ease of pirating in psp

So essentially, no, there is no way around the dumb way leveling works?

It's always sad to see a good game ruined by a single bad design choice.

>85k US, 45k Europe, 270k Japan, 405k worldwide.

For a game that sold half a million copies, you'd think there'd be more demand for a sequel or a new game from the guy.

But instead he went to kickstarter and is currently making some messy 3D affair that looks like absolute shit.

>single
There is also the way crafting works and the impossible to figure out requirements of getting certain characters and endings.

I love TO:LUCT, but it has lots of bullshit in it.

Yeah, it has a few things, I agree, but what I was getting at was more that the leveling is what's going to turn MOST people off the game.

Like, yeah, there are other things, but most people who for example want to try the Beastmaster class aren't going to bother with it at level 30+ into the game.

do not blame matsuno. He is as much as a victim in playdek scam

phil fish's friends use him as bait for the kikestarter and he have no role aside from being $$$ bait and kicked out of the team soon after the kickstarter is over.

I don't know who the fuck to blame, but I'm angry.

The only person on this Earth that we can trust to put out surprisingly good SRPGs, and he now takes it up the ass like a champ?

Be it his fault or not, someone should be angry about it and it might as well be me.

blame playdek and canada then

they are responsible for it and the latter for shitting out assholes like fish and playdek

youtube.com/watch?v=bOR38552MJA

It's only on the GBA version.
You can still have your newbies keep whacking your tanks to get some weapon/skill xp, while the the rest are cleaning up the map.

OB64 is my GOAT. Shh don't mention it here, I don't want the younger Sup Forums crowd finding out about it and ruining it.

>Canada
What why?

>MySwordDoesLiterallyNothing.jpg

Rampart aura remains to this day the most amazing ability a tank could ever wish for in any game ever.

>Heard you was talkin' shit
Baldwin is such a bitch, Richard was way cooler.

It's so unbalanced and just eats up turns. Like, the AI spams that shit so I have literally spent 20+ minutes just chipping away while it didn't try to vary it's strategy at all. I can't help but feel they didn't do any balance work whatsoever on this game.

I wish FFTA was good.

>Pick Law route
>have no idea I can save the qt spear girl character
>people make me feel like an asshole for murdering her

FUUUUCK
GIVE ME MORE OF THOSE CHARACTER DESIGNS
FIRST JRPG (BESIDES FUCKING SOULS AND THE PROFILE SERIES) THAT DOES NOT HAVE FUCKING RETARDED CHARACTERS

GIMMEEEEE

I think my problem with it was that it didn't feel like anything I did had any actual impact.

Every mech was so stupidly tanky, and the repair-mechs that could heal others could do so infinitely, so it became dull real fast.

The story, and the "heartwarming friendship" wasn't as good as they wanted it to be either, honestly.

cons
>meh story
>meh characters
>meh music
>less job variety than FFT
>takes longer to learn abilities compared to FFT
>easy

pros
>can save during battle
>can flee from battles
>can avoid battles on the world map
>better MP system than FFT
>no need to learn how to use items

and I didn't mind the law system tbqh
it's an okay-ish game

>want qt spear girl
>have to murder innocent village to do it
>feel bad about it, but dat ass made me do it.

>less job variety

FFT2 had 52 jobs.

Fifty. Fucking. Two.

from a story perspective, neutral is my favourite route with the lord ending
too bad law gives you the best characters

>FFTA2
Oh, I meant the first advance game
a lot of the jobs overlap between the races
haven't played A2
I'd rather have one race with more jobs

>Denam Pavel
>PAVEL
>P
>A
>V
>E
>L

How in the fuck there is no baneposting in this thread?

I'd rather not ruin a decent thread with memespouting

Why don't you kill yourself you meme loving fuck.

If you can get multiple of the class mark you can level a lot of characters up at the same time.

I always send in 4 swordmasters with Hobyrim to level him up before I take on the Dark Knights because I love the dialogue.

The game was infuriating despite how good it was.
>biggest flaw were custom characters -9 natural in turns, special characters were always faster
>as mentioned leveling system + crafting system

>Pick chaos route
>Spear at died
>Later find out I could've saved her
>Still only did chaos route
>Have to replay the same route to save her
>Don't even know what to do.

I have a few favourites saved up.
Tell me which ones.
You only have 10 minutes before I set off though.

How the fuck am I supposed to level up unique classes for characters? I just got Princess for Cautia but since only she can use it, it's taking got fucking ever to level up. I just gave up and switched her to something else.

get more new classes (patriarch/matriarch, lord, buccaneer, juggernaut, hoplite, familiar, lich, songstress, ranger, divine knight, knight commander) and use them on your new playthrough
that's what I did

I'll have to get enough to fill a party. I'm just finishing Chaos route so I have a fusiler I haven't used at all and Cautia's princess class. I still have to finish the Pirate's quests to get him and I know Vyce can be a ranger so that's 4 right there.

good luck with recruiting azelstan, it was a nightmare for me
you can also recruit a lich during the sidequest if I remember correctly

Thanks dude. I was also working in recruiting Deneb as a Wicce buy that was turning into a huge pain in the ass so I just put that on hold for now. I guess I can try and get her before my second playthrough. Cressida too.

Good list.

so for someone who likes xcom, disgaea and fire emblem will I like that? It looks kinda weird but is it a good game. Can I just go in and learn everything inside (like disgaea) or is there some hidden shit that I need to check a FAQ at?

This game is so much more tolerable on ppsspp with massive skill gain boost cheats enabled.

There's a bunch of party members you can recruit by doing some pretty obscure things, and, like OP complained of, the leveling system is pretty unique.

I advise doing the first run blind, without any guides, and just doing what feels natural. If the shit hits the fan, you can check out a guide or two, but honestly it probably won't.

there's an ingame manual that explains most of the game's mechanics
pressing select will also give you useful descriptions for most things

you'll need a guide to recruit certain unique characters and most of the post game content

Its really not hard to keep level 1 characters away from the enemy. Or just revive them before the battle ends.

What? How do you do that?

You google search the codes to enable it then put it into the damned cheats menu. Its not hard.

You can grind by getting the random encounter shit on certain easy maps. To make things easier you can set it to autobattle after a certain point and they will just clear the map themselves with you just needing to press X occasionally when they do dialogue. You can also bring along one other class who can solo the pathetically easy map, and as long as it's just them and the class you're leveling he'll get a shitload.

well doesnt sound too bad. I give it a try with my emulator

For me story is honestly the main appeal, it's very similar to Final Fantasy Tactics overall except unlike FFT you can be a pragmatic asshole instead of a huge moralfag thanks to the branching story

Legit has one of the best OSTs
youtube.com/watch?v=isw_tM_P6MM

Like said the story's amazing, but the real draw for me's in the writing.

I swear there are few games written as well as LUCT.

indeed
m.youtube.com/watch?v=I6uKHqiIOJA

>Literally almost all the new content including the ENTIRE coda story is for lawfags only while all chaofag content got given to the lawfags and neutralfags too in the remake

Law master race.

>Ravness, the most anti-lawful character added in the remake dies immediately on chaos route and is only recruitable in lawful where you betray her

I really don't get it

It's entirely because Vyse goes batshit on chaos.

I wonder how many people restarted at that scene when they thought they'll get Ravness on the chaos route. I know I did.

Only reason to go chaos.
And she's a law person.

Dunno.
PSP LUCT has some shitty levelling system. really shitty. Why they make it class levelling instead of character levelling?
Never understood Nips. They make something good and then shit at it.
Also one of the best Nips strategy games is Sengoku Rance. Its solid strategy game even it is main hero is raping dick. Mostly because they use the old mechanics from old and forgotten KOEI games.

Rampart aura and Phalanx saved me during the last battle of the CODA when you only use Denam, Vyce and Catiua against all the Black Knight. Lancelot hits fucking hard.

She is LITERALLY the only reason as she is the sole chaos exclusive character unlike lawful which is falling over itself in them

>Spear
You mean Ravness ? If so you have to play the Loyal route to get her. And Ozma too.

GIVE ME THAT RAVNESS PLEASE.

I had to kill like a hundred fresh recruits for her. By then, Denam was OP as fuck since attacking your own men also levels your weapon skill and anatomy. One shotted almost every boss afterwards.

Anyone has female lich official art?
I know it exists, I saw it before, but lost it.

>actually getting through CODA
absolute madman
congratulations, I could never go through something like that

Man, this thread makes me sad. TO series is dead. NEVERMORE. Fuck.

youtube.com/watch?v=gHmpC7tN7VE

Never to return, I fear. Now that the creator has gone and pissed all over his name and reputation, I don't think we'll be seeing much more of him in SPRG-land.

Personally, I'm still hoping an indie developer will catch on that there's a niche no one's filling here.

Personally I prefer the original Psx/Snes version.
The gameplay and system is much more fluid. Also better character builds and no weapon levels.

I wanted to play PSP remake, but it turned out to have Tarot Cards as vital gameplay element.

>vital

not really

It was an absolute pain in the ass when you realize you can't access the last chapter because Vyce wasn't considered alive in the Warren Report and you have to redo everything.

But it was worth it, getting Warren, Lancelot, Iuria and Deneb feels good. They also strong as fuck.
