For some weird reason they decided that the part of the game you where visit the sewers should represent the tone of the entire marketing campaign

Shigesato Itoi was quite known in Japan, jrpgs are quite known in Japan, putting them together created success in Japan.

In the U.S. no one gave a shit about Shigesato Itoi or jrpgs. Couple that with an atrocious ad campaign and arguably the worst "muh graphics" period in gaming and you have a game not many people will give a shit about.

Localization. It went from a quirky japanese rpg in modern America to a literal meme game. Paula even cucks you at the end of the game.

I've played through this game over 7 times. And yes, I can say it with a straight face, Earthbound is literally the definition of a meme game. In fact, Earthbound is not only a meme game, it is the original meme game. Being a meme before any of these other shit games brought up in popularity by the internet came into being. The marketing was perfectly in line with all other comedic gross-out marketing targeting kids in the 90s. It's failure is much more likely due to the fact that it's a jrpg with an odd setting and the fact that it's visuals looked primitive (FF6 came out a few months before).

No, the problem was that the gross-out marketing had very little to do with the actual game. Farting and garbage aren't the primary themes of Earthbound.
The visuals did turn off people, though, especially since it was $70 like other games.
