The music is good, the story is serviceable for a JRPG, and the battle system sucks. For me the battle system is a dealbreaker but if you're the sort of person who likes basic, repetitive battles then you might like it.
The reason that this game and franchise is well regarded is because of marketing.

Lufia 2 is fun but its always like this

Battle system is good, graphics are good, gameplay is good, music is really good (best boss battle theme ive heard), and story is good
The formula is the same but it never gets boring since most dungeons has tons of puzzles and multiple items that make the gameplay be more dynamic

Don't listen to all these contrarian faggots shilling their favorite Final Fantasies.
VI is a solid game with great visuals, amazing music, fun characters, plenty to explore/miss, and a decent story (where the heroes fail to save the world).
It isn't perfect though; while having a large cast of playable characters, some feel a bit extraneous or not fully fleshed out. Also, the unique differences and gimmicks (gameplay-wise) between characters begins to disappear further into the game mainly due to the esper/magic system.
VI is up there with the better FFs and if it does end up disappointing you, then I don't think you will like many of the others.
