PS1 is not a true 3D system and takes tons of short cuts. As such, the 3D has a ton of problems with it, especially if you upscale it. Textures warp and lines, like on walls, ground or on roads never are straight. Look at the road lines in this image. They become distorted, turn to triangles, vanish, and turn back into triangles. With texture correction, they would look normal.

PlayStation emulation has been pretty awful until recently. Epsxe was "good enough" and closed source for years. So no one bothered to improve anything.
Recently a bunch of accurate emulators have popped up. In this case, someone took Mednafen, and tried various improvements like texture correction, GTE accuracy, etc. It didn't quite work, but another guy saw that, built upon it, and has improved it. This is the power of Open Source development. PS1 emulation is in a bit of a rennaisance.
There's also development of other improvements, like CPU overclocking for better FPS.

the plugins can do it. there's a graphical benefit to a certain point mainly in the clarity of what you are seeing, but running it at 4k isn't suddenly going to make it look like a brand new game.

upscaling is literally taking the end result and scaling it bigger, like an image in Photoshop. rendering at a higher resolution is actually rendering more pixels to create a "truly" bigger image. here's an example, from FFIX

Some games were built around that limitation and made use of it for different reasons. So in some cases the games would actually look worse since the visuals don't account for "fixed" texture.

not a single PS1 game used the wobble for artistic purposes, developers did absolutely everything to try and minimize it
recognize it for what it is, graphical errors caused by taking too many mathematical shortcuts to reduce processing load, errors that are always better when gone
Wobble was impossible to account for artistically because it was a mathematical error on the PS. There was no way short of fixing the camera angle to have it be consistent, and if you were going to do that you might as well pre-render.
The anti-aliasing really makes the models look worse than they already are.

the road doesn't really give you any sense of motion in Pepsiman without it, it's just a surface with a bunch of parallel lines perpendicular to the screen when rendered perspective-correct

It was a pretty big cost cutting move in '94 by drastically simplifying the hardware used to generate textured visuals. Of its immediate competition, 3DO generates perspective correct textured polys, but it also cost fucking $600 and was slow, nearly every 3d game on the thing was like 15fps.
there's also the wobble, which is literally just them using cheaper non-floating point hardware to do the math (in 1994, CPUs often still shipped without an FPU on them, although that was on its way out), so you used fixed point and ignored the position snapping when you got too close (and at 320x240, it's a load less noticeable than when rendered at 1024x768, even if it's still visibly there)

I honestly don't see the point. Most of these images are of upscales, which look like SHIT, because the textures were only intended to be seen at fucking 240p.
At lower resolutions, the effect is less pronounced anyway, and instead of relying on trash emulators like PCSXR, which is made by complete morons and isn't even close to accurate, you might as well just play at a lower resolution and put up with a bit of pixellation.

I literally just upgraded ePSXe from 1.9.25 to whatever the newest version is and found the jittering worse than it ever was. I haven't fucked with PSXR in a while due to audio issues.
If vertex jittering and texture warping are gone, then that's basically everything I could have asked for from a PS1 emulator.
Some games run like utter shit with this thing, like CB3. Far from perfect, but it's a good start.

It was much cheaper hardware wise, and both easier and less taxing software wise. The resolutions were so low that the impact in game was fairly minor, and allowed for the most underpowered console of the gen to destroy the competition by providing a simple platform at an affordable cost.
It's way faster so the hardware doesn't need to be so powerful.
If you look at the formulae used in this picture, then the PS1 and Sega Saturn use the simpler formula on the right while the N64 and all modern 3D hardware use the one on the left. That big division slows the whole thing to a crawl if you don't have the right hardware.
