The franchise will never get the last game to rest in peace
Graphics haven't aged well.
On a rail
Surface Tension and Xen have lots of shitty and annoying moments. Xen in particular.
Surface tension was one of the best parts.
this however
Playing through it co-op with Sup Forums was an exercise in frustration
There aren't any.
Objectively it's a masterpiece.
Anyone who disagrees is simply being contrarian (or was a shitter that didn't like On a Rail or Xen)
Flash light.
artificial difficulty
DOOM 3 is objectively a better game in that sort of game type, linear with an interesting backstory to it.
The boarder world, Hell is in our control for the meantime..
>half life
>hard
You have cerebral palsy or something?
bland main character
the main character is as bland as you make it
I'll name two.
On a rail.
Xen.
bugs
Platforming in first person
>Everyone hates On A Rail
>It's one of my favorite parts of the game
best part is it takes like 2 minutes if you know where you're going at all
Surface Tension
Agreed.
It's nice it it's not your first playthrough, true.
This millenium had good four years of gaming then it all turned to shit.
Saddens me that Half Life is still one of the most replayable game ever fifteen years later.
The intro sequence.
20 to 30 minutes of pointless shit on a replay. Unskippable, meaning that much like Max Payne 3, it's hard to replay. I have played the game many times, and would love to play it again, but the long intro is really annoying. Even after the tram ride, getting the HEV suit, doing the experiment, the next section is pretty boring and the game doesn't kick into gear until Office Complex.
Also I love the underground secret lab aesthetic but the never ending concrete hallways get very drab and boring after a while, and while it makes sense it all looks that way, it's not visually interesting in any way. The best moments are when you finally get to the surface, a tease of what you've been waiting for, then you have to go back down. It's a really great way to keep the player going and involved, but the fact you never get to the surface for real, and instead end up exploring some alien planet is odd. Not to discredit Xen, it makes for some great levels if you're not a shitter who complains about the platforming, but even Xen is fairly uninteresting on replay. Sure the dead bodies tell little stories in themselves, but it's all just green alien bullshit in design, and besides some of the fauna, there's zero variations.
Opposing Force is superior as a game in my eyes, it's a more sustainable length and has more varied areas.
I just realized I haven't beaten Opposing Forces yet.
You are forced to use steam to play it
Can't wait for Operation Black Mesa and Guard Duty. Anyway is there any ETA on Xen for Blackmesa? This is taking forever...
Not if you have the original CD.
>sv_cheats 1
>map
>give item_suit
then give any weapons that are appropriate
not difficult user
Speed running half life 1, Edit the game files to slightly increase the speed by a factor 00.1
Everyone thinks i'm a faster speed runner..
You're missing my point. Of course you can cheat and change the game, but OP said any flaws, and this flaw does exist upon actual replay.
If you have to cheat to bypass certain sequences or issues, then the game obviously has a flaw.
Now, now - Gordon doesn't need to hear all this.
the source version of half life has a chapter select
Couldn't use the long jump more.
>PEOPLE IN THIS DAY AND AGE STILL DON'T LIKE XEN
HAHAHA
>tfw you lose all interest in the Half Life franchise when you realize even the devs don't know where the story is going, and have made numerous retcons already
It loses all of its mystery and flair once you realize that you know just as much as the devs do about who G Man is. The only way to make him work will be to ignore the majority of HL2's events like they did with HL1 in 2, and make a completely new story/world that is fairly unconnected.
I wish HL2 was its own game instead of HL1's sequel, because it has next to nothing to do with it besides some "haha so funny xD" callbacks made possible only through retcons.
>theverge.com/2016/1/8/10736894/half-life-writer-marc-laidlaw-leaves-valve
I would also love to know about it.
there will never be a half-life 3

Uncut version of Surface Tension this month apparently. No ETA on Xen.. :'(
It's not like the first game really has an amazing story. The objective of the game is to game to a different lab because they know how to fix everything and send you to an alien world. And apparently a mysterious guy with god powers knows about everything, but does nothing except try to kill as many people as possible, even though he's not the villain.
If there is, it will be a Vulkan Steam OS exclusive.
I don't see why you should be upset he left. He is the one who wrote the unconnected stories of HL1 and HL2, it's not like him staying would fix the already present flaws in HL canon, or help them moving forward.
No I agree, the story is almost nonexistent, and that's good. It's literally about surviving in a terrible situation, couldn't be simpler, and that's why I wish HL2 was a different game instead of trying to create a grand story out of what happened in HL1 like it was some sort of ground zero for alien takeover. Exactly, G Man is useless, has done contradicting things many times, and is overall uninteresting being that the devs obviously don't know who he is or why he does what he does either.
Portal 1 and 2 have a far more compelling story than Half Life ever did.
You're right about Portal 2. Cave Johnson is probably one of the best characters in any game. Portal 1 is mostly absent from story (similar to half-life) though.
autism, boss.

Does Sup Forums agree?
>tfw Race X retconned
store.steampowered.com
>fan made sequel to opposing force
Oh sweet op4 was great i wonder wh
>same awful weapons as 2
>still fighting combine dudes
>no race x
>no fingerless gloves, clearly just the hev suit
FUCK
The HECU are far too smart and at the same time too dumb.
Snipe you with a mp5 or run at you with a live grenade? Pick you poison.
>even the devs don't know where the story is going, and have made numerous retcons already
this actually describes most serialized fiction
physics suck
I didn't know Sammyclassicsonicfan still made videos

Oh come on... That kid wasn't even born when HL came out. Hurr durr I don't get all the references so the game is shit.
Fuck off.
Long jump comes too late.
Couldn't watch past the 4 minutes mark desu. That voice is a pretty strong give away, kid is just pissed he was still shitting in diapers when the first game came out.
1 is better than 2, but this kid is WAY too fucking salty about every little thing about 2.
Yeah, I do kind of agree. The story pieces ARE a lot different and changed parts of the original HL. Half-Life 2 is still a good game, even though it's abundantly evident from all the audio recordings that it's a tech demo and Valve were basically including as much as possible to make it bigger than the first game (seriously just look at Ravenholm for the most obvious examples).
its just a shitty overrated quake mod
There are far better solo mods for free on the Source engine, even directly on Steam. Some random kid can sell a game 10€ on Steam, just because muh source engine.
It isn't Opposing Force.
Bugged jumping mechanics
He makes solid points but the kid is crazy annoying. I don't find HL2 to be a bad game, just underwhelming compared to the mainstream praise it catches.
On hard the HECU are annoying. They don't get stunned when shot, they take noteworthy damage before dying, and they can shoot you really fast and do solid damage from it.
It's just annoying how Doom 1 had enemies that flinched when shot and made hitscan enemies fairly weak, but HL1 has them as some of the most dangerous enemies in the game.
Fucking Opposing Force has all those Black Ops dudes and they are insanely hard to deal with on hard.
HL2 kind of has a similar issue. HL2s major issue mechanically is that they straight took the weapons from 1 and plopped them into a game with much larger engagement distances.
If you include the story of Portal 1 and 2, HL2 makes even less sense.
Do people actually like the gravity gun?
I'd much prefer the tau/gluon/hivehand over it tbvh
It spawned counter-shit with all it's babies.
Gravity Gun is okay but it largley boils down to "oh look, an explosive barrel, better toss it". I think like 90% of the kills are just from the normal firearms and I use the GG to open up crates and stuff.
The wacky guns from 1 are a lot more interesting, the Hivehand was great for snagging enemies while staying in cover.
Linear
Nihlanth
That part in Xen where you had to launch yourself up onto either platforms or those stingray alien niggers.
That's about it, i think.
not liking Xen
get gud fggt
Friendly Reminder:

1. something designed to attract extra attention, interest, or publicity
>pseudo-cutscenes
>At least a third of the game is driving.
>near non-existent story
>cinematic experience
>railroady
>no bosses
>did I mention Combine AI were absolute garbage? I'm pretty sure I mentioned it
>did absolutely nothing new
>only helped with making the FPS genre into a stale piece of shit
No user, you dumbass. Just 'that' part of xen.
Too many unnecessary deaths just cause, well you know, using the wrong bit that launches you onto those platforms / stingrays.
And then god forbid you mistime your launch by a second or two, cause you're just plain stuck with spamming F9
Black mesa is better
The graphics and sound effects are literally the worst of all time and I thought that in 2006 never mind 2016
Wait... half life 8???
That's because you're underage b& who can't appreciate the passage of time.
cannot unsee
>it's been 9 years since the release of episode 2
> tfw valve will release half life 4 5 6 7 and 8 before they release half life 3
>bad graphics and sound
sure user, sure.
2004 was 12 years ago
I can play n 64 games just fine but half life's graphics are disgusting. its like a game made out of sick
not enough revolver ammo
there is that find you can swim down to and I guess it would completely fuck over the balancing, but that gun is the best and I wish you got to use it more
the title of his video I agree with but I ain't watching all of that
I hope Valve make Episode 3 in Goldsrc.
Sequel.
How can you mess up gun feel that badly?
Can't think of one right now. The graphics might not be pretty but they give a feeling of dred and loneliness which fit the game very fucking well.
The black mesa remake doesn't give me this feeling
He's 24
i bet he's right but he's obnoxious
HL2 is really not that good, HL1 holds up. this has been admitted by the.. well by Sup Forums anyways for some time now
>dread and loneliness
thats just cringey as fuck, user.
cause, for starters - HL is literally not even a horror game.
>thats just cringey as fuck, user.
>your feeling is wrong and also I'm gonna be a dick
never change Sup Forums
>1998 was 400 years ago
Why do we have to wear these RIDICULOUS ties!?
>muh feelings
aww, well aren't you such a special snowflake
why don't you go post about this at leddit about le Sup Forums being mean, im sure it'll get you many le upboats, faggot.
if only I could kiss you on the cheek user
if only I could bury my face in your chest
if I could love you
we could be good together
and I could dispel the bitterness that haunts you
enemies don't really hitstun ever when shot with weaponry.
that's really the biggest flaw in the game. otherwise it's perfect.
don't forget
>almost all enemies are either zombies or humans
I miss all the crazy different types of aliens the first games and the spin-offs had
>zombies or humans
They could totally have made up for that lack of enemy variety with some other cool gimmicky shit, rather than that physics gun.
Hell, hate to bring FEAR into this, but you know, it's another widely known FPS that has shitty enemy variety as well, but at least in there you could bicycle kick, fry up, and just have a hell of a time in slow-mo.
You could very well look back at HL1, and at least there was some pretty fun guns to play with at least.
HL2 dropped the ball, big time.
>fifteen years later
Try eighteen.
Don't talk shit. It doesn't take anyone 20-30 minutes to get to Unforeseen Consequences.
>STILL NO XEN
>those aimbot marines
nah
>this meme
I love opfor but it's not better than HL. Replay them
>tfw no rebel alien grunts or controllers
>tfw no scene of a grunt trying to use a human gun with it's big meaty claws while a rebel makes up excuses to not put his hand up a hivehand
>tfw none of the aliums wearing human clothing besides that one scientist vort
But why
