They're highly significant on the tech and art side of the gaming industry. As far as that goes, Naughty Dog is up there with the best of the best. Highly prestigious, you have to be at the top of your field to work there. There are very few companies like that, of course they're well respected.

I've honestly never been more confused about the disparity between me and the rest of the industry than when I played the Uncharted games.

I think I can understand why games like CoD and Skyrim can take off even if they're not my cup of tea, but I just can't wrap my head around what people see in Uncharted that I don't. Is it really entirely just the set pieces? Do people really find that sort of thing so incredibly interesting?

Besides Jak 2 and 3, most of their games are at least ok. This translates to them being the best developers ever to some people for whatever reason.

they make great games and have built up such a reputation that everyone who plays their games has ridiculously high standards. The only other dev that is really comparable in this regard is Rockstar

They are considered an old school developer and even if you think their games are mediocre, the effort put serious effort into them and they've been getting increasingly better over time, they started out with a 70 metascore and have moved to 90+ as their talents have grown and Sony has given them better tech to work with.

They are respected for the effort they put into their games and they sort of ride on being popular in popculture like Nintendo is regarded, even though Nintendo legitimately don't deserve the notoriety they have any more because absolutely zero cutting edge gameplay or visuals or game design has been put in a Nintendo game during last decade.

Well it's definitely not the gameplay. It's a mediocre third-person shooter with abysmal puzzles, platforming, and stealth segments.

It's not terrible but there's nothing special about it at all and it gets stale very quickly. I was pretty tired of the game's formula by partway through the first and expected something a bit more refreshing from the rest but it never really progressed much.

Seems like you could get far more variety and general fun from most other shooters.

I am pro Sony and I don't see the hype. Sure I liked uncharted 1-2 and tlou but they're so...safe and plain I guess. I prefer fantasy and sick gameplay in my games which is why I prefer Japanese games, much more excited for FFXV.

I can understand this perfectly. The Uncharted series is extremely polished with countless hours animating huge setpieces, a simple, but charming story, great soundtrack, etc.

But what I don't get is how game reviewers genuinely believe it's a masterpiece and put these games among the best ever made despite having no depth in the formulaic gameplay and an unoriginal - if well done - story.

Citizen kane is most famous for its cinematography so from that point of view Mario 64 is probably the 'Citizen kane of video games' because it was the first game to really nail the camera in 3d space.

Ill be honest. Dota 2, MGR, UT4 and EVE are the only things I have left that Im capable of enjoying at the moment. Ashes of singularity will be good after its done and SS4 if it ever releases. But for now Dota is more or less all I have.

Not many devs similar types of games and those who do (TR reboot) deviate enough from the formula since ND is already the master at it

Uncharted was never meant to be some deep "Citizen Kane of gaming" thing. You're thinking of The Last of Us. Uncharted is just an adventure serial with a very polished cinematic presentation. It just so happens to have exciting and fun gameplay as well, in addition to gorgeous graphics, physics, animations, and amazing audio

Fair enough, you could really go either way. On one hand I think Mario 64 just introduced so much stuff that its a good contender but on the other hand Ocarina had Z-targeting and was a lot more of an emotional experience because Mario 64 was honestly somewhat of a tech demo.

They're two games that completely changed video game storytelling and took the medium to new heights and had more interactive worlds than had ever been seen before. Ultima IV's combat definitely doesn't hold up but System Shock's is still better than Uncharted.

Games never look amazing from youtube viedos. Uncharted plays like a India a Jones movie. Funny Banter during shootouts, good cutscenes made in Engine making it feel consisent.

And simply fun enemies to fight. The heavys, supernatural elements its all really good, character interaction.

The gameplay is okay. But combined with everything else becomes a really rich game.

Stealth in uc4 is basically npc patrolling in a 10 sec loop and killing behind them when they are looking away. It feels very tacked on as the mechanic is barebones.

I cant get into anything that doesnt have enough real time crunch. Even darksouls feela to shallow. Shenmue 1 and 2 are the real Citizen Kane of video games. Shenmue is arguably the first true modern video game.

Cinematic presentation for cutscenes, tons of collectibles, dynamic weather system and realistic passage of time, fully voiced dialogue, all NPCs are unique and have first and last names, schedules/a life, full orchestral soundtrack, and a literal epic story as the storyline was planned as a huge franchise.

All of this in 1999 and 2001. Probably a whole lot more stuff I'm missing. Worth mentioning Shenmue 2 is an incredible sequel.

Yes I played them. I just can't put as much weight into background elements as everyone else seems capable of, because without all of those the series is pretty uninteresting. Even with them, I don't think the stories or characters are especially good.
